Among the first sparks of trade deadline fever breaking out today with the Ichiro trade to New York and the Miami Marlins trading away infielder Omar Infante and starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez to the Detroit Tigers, the Giants seem to be searching for some help in the bullpen.

Ken Rosenthal and Jon Morosi of FOX sports reported yesterday they have a major league source saying the Giants are “very interested” in the Cleveland Indian’s closer, Chris Perez.

Yup, this Perez guy would fit right into San Francisco. (Rich Pilling/Getty Images)

Perez, 27, is playing in his fifth season in the big leagues and third primarily as a closer. He has also made the American League all-star roster for the past two seasons. This year, Perez has a 2.97 ERA, 27 saves out of 29 opportunities with 42 strikeouts and only seven walks. Seven Walks. Seven. Walks.

I like the low walk count and his WHIP has been a low 1.02. His strikeout-to-walk ratio has been an unbelievable six to one and he has only given up 12 runs all year.Although the Giants seem to have a strong urgency to find a right handed power bat before the trade deadline, getting a guy like Perez in the bullpen would be a huge upgrade.

Santiago Casilla have been good this season as the Giants closer, but in the last nine save opportunities, he has only successfully saved four. I don’t know what is wrong with Casilla lately, but it seems like he would be more comfortable in a setup role or as a seventh inning man.

Perez has better stats than Casilla in save percentage, ERA, ERA+, K/9, BB/9, WHIP, and home runs. His $4.5 million contract ends after this season, but he is up for arbitration as a Super  2 player and will be under team control through 2014. Some say he could make up to $7 million next year.

Brian Wilson is expected to be healthy by next season, and he is up for arbitration as well following this season. He made $6.5 million last season and is making $8.5 million in his final year of his contract this season. Will the Giants keep him if they end up trading for Perez?

Who knows, what’s important is that the Giants are looking to improve at least one of their weaknesses – the bullpen –  by the end of July, and so far it appears they are looking in the right place.
