The San Francisco Giants were unable to work a deal with the San Diego Padres for closer Heath Bell by Friday's 1 p.m. ET deadline, SI.com reported.
The Giants were awarded a waiver claim for Bell, who is tied for third in the National League with 35 saves. Ironically, Bell is tied with Brian Wilson of the Giants, who is on the disabled list.
The defending World Series champion Giants are three games behind first-place Arizona in the National League West Division and were looking for someone to replace Wilson, who has an elbow injury and will not be ready to come off the DL when he becomes eligible Wednesday.
Bell will be a free agent this offseason and is looking for a multi-year deal from the Padres or another team.
