Baseball begins in the States tonight with one game in Miami, then opens in a handful of other cities tomorrow, and then comes to a handful more on Friday*, before the first full slate of games on Saturday.

* – including in Arlington at Rangers Ballpark for White Sox-Rangers…I’ll be there!

While some people may be lamenting this ridiculously unnecessary and lame staggered Opening Week schedule, I’m just accepting it for what it is and focus on more important thoughts…thoughts like this:

Hawk Harrelson is back!

In this picture, Hawk looks like an aging cross between Dracula and Sloth from Goonies.

I realize that for some of you Hawk Harrelson is a name that inspires dread, eye rolling, and unbridled rancor. Fine. To each their own.

Not me.

For all his faults as an announcer, including his annoying propensity to harp too much on the umpiring when things are going poorly, I still wouldn’t trade Hawk for anyone on White Sox broadcasts.

He’s our Hawk, and I like my baseball announcers to be complete homers anyway, so that’s a moot argument to me.

Besides, love him or hate him, you have to appreciate moments like the one below, which breathe unexpected bursts of life into the dog days of summer.

What announcer would spend two minutes giggling like a school girl after seeing a player get popped in the ballsac? Hawk Harrelson, that’s who. And that’s one of the many reasons why he’s awesome.

Confession: I’d never seen this video before reading this terrific post by Pete Fitzgerald entitled “The Ten Coolest Things About Being a White Sox Fan“. (Seriously, nice work Pete. Between this video and the nugget about Frank Thomas being in NBA Jam: Tournament Edition, I became a better White Sox by reading that.)

I’m not sure how I missed this classic moment since I get the MLB.TV package and plan extra carefully to be free when the White Sox are on national TV or WGN, but I did. I blame Kevin. He’s supposed to alert me to extra funny Hawk Harrelson moments when I miss them.

And speaking of Kevin, make sure to check us out on White Sox Off Day and follow us on Twitter.

We’ll have a new episode, as the title suggests, every off day for the Sox this season. If you feel like getting in the mood for 2012 with two of the most respected White Sox voices on the web, listen to our two Spring Training episodes with Jim Margalus of South Side Sox (click here) and Tom Fornelli of South Side Asylum (click here).

Baseball is back! I can’t wait for Friday.
