Last time

It has been a while since the Sox and Orioles met. The Orioles came to Fenway from June 5-7 and took 2 out of 3 from the Sox. Game 1 went into extra and Alfredo Aceves gave up 2 to the Orioles in the 10th and the Sox could not come back from it.  Wei-Yin Chen and Josh Beckett had a pitching duel in game 2, with the Orioles coming out on top again, 2-1. The Sox salvaged the final game and made a statement doing it with a 7-0 win over Baltimore.  Gonzalez, Nava, and a former un-named third baseman gave the Sox a big offensive lift in that game.

This time

Laser Show: Adrian Gonzalez

No explanation needed.
Pitch Around: Adam Jones

Adam Jones has not made a big splash against the Sox this season, but he still poses the biggest offensive threat. Jones is also the biggest threat on the bases, so keeping him off of the base-paths will be a huge help to containing the Orioles.

Don't Fall Behind: Wei-Yin Chen

Chen pitched well in his last outing against the Sox and we will see the rematch of Beckett and Chen tonight. Chen had a tough outing against the Royals, so the Sox could get lucky and hit him while he is down.

How we see it goin' down

Baltimore is not as good as they were earlier in the season. They are still that 5.5 games better than the Sox which makes a world of difference right now. The Sox have a great opportunity to gain some ground which leads me to believe they are going to blow it. The Orioles are going to once again take 2 out of 3, crushing more hopes of a playoff berth.

Should Beckett Turn the Page on the Calendar?

Anyone who has followed the career of Josh Beckett knows that he is reluctant to change. Pitching coaches and managers have come and gone and all ended up throwing up their hands and saying that the best way to deal with the big righthander is to let him do his thing. Apparently, Beckett is now reluctant to turn the pages of the calendar as well. Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration...

PITCHf/x Profile: Dissecting the Decline and Fall of Josh Beckett by Dan Brooks

In 2007, Josh Beckett finished second in the AL Cy Young voting. He led the league with 20 wins. He was a 4.8 PWARP player, good for third in MLB. He struck out 8.7 batters per nine innings and finished with 194 punchouts. Fast forward to 2012. Beckett’s win-loss record is 5-9; more importantly, his walk rate is up, and his strikeout rate is down. He’s been worth 0.5 PWARP, good...

Adrian Gonzalez Named AL Co-Player of the Week

Here's the press release from the Boston Red Sox announcing that Adrian Gonzalez along with Baltimore Orioles rookie Manny Machado have been the American League Co-Players of the Week for the week ending 8/12/12: Boston Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado have been named the American League Co-Players of the Week for...

Red Sox Live Blog: Josh Beckett Looks to Rebound, Leave Boos Behind as Sox Continue Road Trip in Baltimore

8 a.m. ET: Strap in folks, Josh Beckett (5-9, 4.97) returns to the hill on Tuesday evening in Baltimore. Each of the last two times Beckett has stepped off the mound -- both at Fenway Park -- it was to a chorus of boos, as the Fenway faihful clearly let their frustration with the underperforming ace be known. Perhaps it's justified, as Beckett has been a big part of the Boston...

Recap: Sox catch a beatin' in Baltimore

The optimism stemming from the 14-1 victory over the Indians was short-lived as the Sox got knocked back down again in Baltimore, losing 7-1. Nothing was going for the Sox tonight, with the only positive being the return introduction of Andrew Bailey. Josh Beckett pitched well through the first 4 innings, surrendering only 1 run, a solo homer. Another run came in the 5th ( another...

Dustin Pedroia Scorching at Plate, Will Try to Right Boston's Ship With Adrian Gonzalez Against Orioles

Editor's note: The temperature gauge is a Bill James-created statistic that measures how hot or cold hitters are. We will spotlight Red Sox and opposing team temperatures on game days. The Red Sox are entering the do-or-die portion of their schedule, and with too many more games like Tuesday night's 7-1 loss to the Orioles, Boston likely will not continue playing baseball...

Machado wins co-AL Player of the Week in his first “week”

Despite playing in only four games, Manny Machado’s production during that short stretch was enough to earn him American League Player of the Week honors (sharing the award with Boston’s Adrian Gonzalez). In his four games, the O’s young third baseman went 6-for-16 with three home runs, one triple, one double, five runs scored and seven runs batted in. Those numbers are good...

Machado doesn't take long to win AL weekly honors

Manny Machado's big debut is national news at this point. The Baltimore Orioles rookie infielder, who was called up Thursday, was named the American League Co-Player of the Week on Monday for a period ending Sunday. He shared the honor with Boston Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Through four games, Machado is 6-for-16 with a double, a triple, three homers, seven RBI...

Tuesday Red Sox Mediocrity - 8/14

After splitting a four-game set in Cleveland, the Boston Red Sox continue their 10-game road trip in Baltimore. Tonight, they'll kick off the first game of a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Orioles television market...

Red Sox: Orioles in for a beating?

By SBRForum.com Are things ever going to get better? Our beloved Red Sox can’t seem to get it together and time is starting to run out. A good showing in Baltimore versus the Orioles would be a great step to finally turning it around. In years past, Boston fans would’ve been extremely confident when Josh Beckett got the assignment. That’s no longer the case. The Red Sox open...

Long ball powers O’s past Red Sox in series opener

Just as they’ve done all season, the Orioles once again made their living on the back of the long ball last night, using home runs to take the first game of the three-game set from the Boston Red Sox. Omar Quintanila got things started in the bottom of the third with a solo shot off Boston starter Josh Beckett. Amazingly, it was Quintanila’s third Orioles home run in only 68...

Orioles’ Machado is Co-American League Player of the Week

MLB Network is reporting that Baltimore Orioles’ rookie sensation Manny Machado is co-American League Player of the Week for August 6th to the 12th. Machado, playing in only four games this week — the first four of his career — secured a .375 batting average, a 1.500 OPS, three home runs, a triple, a double, and seven RBIs. Machado shares the honor with the Red Sox’ Adrian...

Yahoo!: Anti-Valentine regiment met with owners about manager

Jeff Passan of Yahoo! has a juicy, gossip-filled article about the unrest on Yawkey Way. It culminates around a meeting that took place in July at the behest of a group of Red Sox players, including Adrian Gonzalez and Dustin Pedroia, at which they expressed displeasure with many of Bobby Valentine's tactics. Gonzalez and Dustin Pedroia were among the most vocal in the meeting...

Orioles 7, Red Sox 1

BALTIMORE-Mark Reynolds homered twice and drove in four runs while starter Wei-Yin Chen gave up one run in six-plus innings as the Orioles defeated Boston, 7-1, in the opener of a three-game series Tuesday night. Reynolds snapped a 1-1 tie with his first homer, a solo shot in the fifth. He then broke the game open with a three-run shot in the sixth that gave the Orioles their six...

Real Housewives of Boston: Why the Red Sox are the cattiest team in baseball

I have been greatly enjoying the season-long meltdown of the Boston Red Sox. As if last year's fried chicken and beer brigade (and September collapse!) weren't fun enough, this season has had all sorts of schadenfreude for those of us in Yankeeland. Now things have gotten even more ridiculous for the Real Housewives of Boston -- because, frankly, that's what these ballplayers...
