Tim Hudson's fastball wasn't great. His sinker sometimes stunk. His cutter didn't always do what he wanted. None of that mattered on Sunday. It was a great day for Hudson. Seven months to the day after his last big league start which ended in a season-ending loss to the Phillies -- and five months after back surgery, Hudson returned to a big league mound. It wasn't always pretty. He didn't bewilder the Pittsburgh Pirates with his immense repertoire of pitches. The defense sometimes struggled behind him. Hudson even had a standoff with the home plate ump. But he started and grinded through five mostly effective innings, hanging around long enough to earn the win and help the Braves defeat the Pirates 4-3 and move into a tie with Miami for first place in the NL East. For Hudson, this game helped prove that his back is healthy again, that his right arm is sound, and that at 36 years old, he can still set down big league hitters. It helped show that he can r...

Braves option Gearrin to clear spot for Hudson

The Atlanta Braves have optioned right-hander Cory Gearrin to Triple-A Gwinnett to clear a roster spot for Tim Hudson to come off the disabled list and start in Sunday's game against Pittsburgh. Hudson is making his season debut after recovering from surgery in November to repair a herniated disc in his back. The right-hander had discomfort in his back the past two seasons,...

Bourn sending Braves to win column

Michael Bourn is doing exactly what the Braves hoped and certainly thought -- he would. He's hitting and darting and dashing and tracking down everything hit in Atlanta's 404 area code. Bourn is the Braves' first true leadoff hitter in seven years and their best center fielder since Andruw Jones waved goodbye to Atlanta in 2007. And he's playing like it. In large...

Braves err on side of caution to manage injuries

Manager Fredi Gonzalez and the Braves training staff are taking no chances on lingering injuries this season. That is the residue of last September's collapse, caused in part by catcher Brian McCann's weak offense after coming back too soon from a strained left oblique. So when right-fielder Jason Heyward woke up Monday morning with a tender right oblique, there was no question...

GIFcap: Dan Uggla Dives To Catch Ball Then Rolling Judo Tosses Tyler Pastornicky

A wonderful play by Dan Uggla, but it’s far from the best part. After catching the ball, Uggla proceeds to drive his right knee into Tyler Pastornicky‘s gut and right shin into his groin, then completes a rolling judo throw by using his right hand to grab Pastronicky’s left shoulder and send him flying. Note

Chipper Jones is Still The Man

<a href="" class="moshare-hoz-counter" data-channel="wordpress-1.2.7" data-message="Topps Stadium Club Signed in Blue Sharpie The other night as I sat in my Los Angeles hotel room changing channels I turned to the Dodger game and randomly Chipper Jones was batting. As Vince Scully's voice rang out and exclaimed...

Game Day Pictures: Braves vs Pirates 4-27-12

Our pretty Beachy "stretching" during batting practice Cousin Catherine and I went to the game Friday, had a super-awesome time. The picture above is the best one I snagged, but I'll post a few more below. Everyone was pretty scattered today! Rossy laughing. EO hat. HUDDY! Kimmie's cute grin. I swear, it looks like Meds can see my lens pointed at him from all the...

Delgado, Braves struggle in loss to Pirates

ATLANTA (AP) -- Streaking Alex Presley helped the Pirates finally provide tough-luck starter Erik Bedard some support and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Atlanta Braves 4-2 on Saturday night. Presley had two hits to extend his career-best hitting streak to 12 games. He scored two runs and drove in a run with a double. Pedro Alvarez also had a run-scoring double. Bedard (1-4) gave...

Betting on the Pirates Again!

Tim Hudson returns to the mound today to face the Pirates and Kevin Correia who has allowed only 4 runs in 18 innings pitched this year. My gut says Pit so lets take Pit +145. More games coming later.....

Phillies-Braves Preview

The last time Philadelphia and Atlanta met, the Phillies left the field victorious and ready to begin the playoffs. The Braves walked off stunned that they would be missing the postseason after holding a seemingly insurmountable wild-card lead just weeks earlier. Atlanta and Philadelphia open a three-game series Tuesday night at Turner Field, the site where the Phillies eliminated...
