The Cleveland Indians have optioned Jeanmar Gomez to Triple-A Columbus, opening a spot in their starting rotation that will go to Zach McAllister.
The team recalled left-hander Scott Barnes from Columbus on Monday before the opener of a three-game series against the New York Yankees. Barnes will work out of the bullpen.
McAllister is expected to be called up from Columbus to start Thursday night in Baltimore, and manager Manny Acta confirmed that the right-hander will get several chances to hold down a job in the rotation.
Gomez had been with the Indians all season. The right-hander is 4-7 with a 5.18 ERA in 14 games, including 13 starts.
McAllister went 1-1 with a 3.96 ERA in four starts for Cleveland earlier this season.

A ninth inning rally makes this box score look respectable. The Indians dropped to one game over .500 and 1.5 games behind the White Sox. Jack Hannahan was ejected for arguing with the 3B ump, who clearly botched a call.

The Cleveland Indians had an uneven week, starting off great with a sweep of the Cincinnati Reds, but following that up with a disappointing series loss against the Houston Astros. Overall, the Indians were 4-2 on the week, which brought their overall record to 37-34. The Indians are back at 0.5 games behind the Chicago White Sox in the...
Cleveland Indians pitcher Roberto Hernandez was suspended Saturday for three weeks by Major League Baseball for age and identity fraud.
Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said in a statement that Hernandez, formerly known as Fausto Carmona, has received a visa to return to the United States and that he would be eligible to rejoin the team Aug. 11.
Hernandez will address the...
The Indians dropped their second straight to the Astros to lose their interleague series in Houston. As was the case on Saturday, the Tribe got on the board first with a run in the second. But it would be all Houston from there on, as they poured in on in the late innings to cruise to another easy win. Derek Lowe kept it close, giving up three runs but both Nick Hagadone and Esmil...
Things you can set your watch by: Death, taxes, Stuart Scott annoying people on ESPN, and the Indians failing to handle left-handed starters. It seems to be a rite of passage for anyone new that has joined the Wahoos in the last two years. You show up, and you struggle against lefties. After a weekend where the Houston Astros took two of three from the first place Cleveland Indians...
The first-place Cleveland Indians witnessed the offensively challenged Houston Astros put a big number on the board during their latest contest, marking their worst performance since Derek Lowe took the mound earlier in the week.
Given the way Lowe has been pitching lately - especially against the National League - Houston's lineup could be in for another big day.
Are you a fan of witnessing baseball history? If so then start rooting against Casey Kotchman and Mike Napoli getting hits. That’s because Kotchman and Napoli would become the first players since 2002 to sandwich a season of hitting .300 between two seasons with sub-.250 batting averages. To date, 14 players have accomplished the feat:
Player of the Game
Accounting for the only run today, Jose Lopez walks away with today's Player of the Game. In the 2nd inning, Lopez led off the inning with a double. He advanced to 3rd on a ground out by Michael Brantley and came around to score on a wild pitch with Shelley Duncan batting. His score of 1.23 gives him 5 PoG awards on the year.
Derek Lowe placed...
Player of the Game
Maybe it's a good thing that Jack Hannahan was ejected tonight. His replacement, Jose Lopez, took advantage of his only at bat with a 3-run home run in the 9th inning. In just one at bat, Lopez scored 5.75 points, winning him his 6th Player of the Game and his 2nd in 3 games.
The Indians did not get shut out due to a rally in the top of the...
Cleveland Indians 1 — New York Yankees 7 Robinson Cano continues his hot hitting in tonight’s 7-1 against the Cleveland Indians. Two runs in each of the first 3 innings provided an easy start for Hiroki Kuroda. The Japanese right-hander went 7 innings with the only run he allowed coming after he had [...]

The Indians dropped the second game of their interleague series in Houston by a final of 8-1. The Tribe opened the scoring with a solo shot by Asdrubal Cabrera, but it all came apart for Jeanmar Gomez in the fifth inning and the Astros were well on their way. Dallas Keuchel went the distance for the Astros, allowing just the Cabrera blast.
