The Winnipeg Goldeyes have signed former Baltimore Oriole Rhyne Hughes. Hughes has nine years of professional experience under his belt. He split time with the Tampa Bay Rays, Baltimore Orioles and New York Mets. In 852 games, he's hit 107 home runs and has driven in 451. His best season came in 2009 with the AA/AAA affiliates of the Rays and Orioles when he batted .279 with 25 home runs and 79 RBI. 2014 will be his first in independent baseball, and Goldeyes manager Rick Forney is thrilled to have a power bat from the left side. "We've been looking for an impact left-handed bat for the middle of our lineup and we're obviously thrilled to have Rhyne Hughes become part of the Goldeyes organization," Forney said. "He's the kind of guy that can certainly carry a team for a significant period of time." The Amarillo Sox re-signed the American Association Rookie of the Year Joe Weik. Weik began his professional career as an undrafted free agent within the Arizona Diamondback organization. Weik spent 47 games with the Diamondbacks Rookie League team where he batted .266 with two home runs. Weik spent 2012 in the North American Baseball League batting .340.
