The Cubs kicked off their 10-game home stand with a four-game series against the Padres. There were great outings by our starting pitchers, and by “our starting pitchers,” I mean the Cubs starting pitchers.  Offensively, the Cubs seem to be getting more life, they finished off the month of April with 35 home runs, which is third in franchise history.  Defensively they need to get better, the Cubs have committed 22 errors, which is second most in the majors, and those errors have led to fourteen unearned runs. 4/29 vs. Padres W 5-3 4/30 vs. Padres L 7-13 5/01 vs. Padres W 6-2 5/02 vs. Padres L 2-4 vs. The Padres 4/29- Jeff Samardzija gave up three runs on four hits and struck out eight in five innings of work. He did not get the win and is actually 0-4 with a no-decision since his Opening Day victory over the Pirates, that’s why you can’t trust wins and losses because it is not a fair reflection of how a starter has been pitching. Michael Bowden picked up the win and Kevin Gregg his fourth save. Darwin Barney hit two RBI doubles and Scott Hairston and Cody Ransom hit back to back home runs and helped get the 5-3 victory over the Padres. 4/30- The Cubs starting pitchers have definitely been a bright spot this season, they entered Tuesday’s game with a combined 3.21 ERA and 15 quality starts, which places them fifth in the NL. Edwin Jackson, however, has struggled. He allowed eight runs on eleven hits in just 4 2/3 innings. Jackson is the Cubs biggest offseason acquisition, signing a four-year, $52 million contract; he remains winless and has a 6.27 ERA. The offense had a pretty good game, Luis Valbuena (2-run homer), Starlin Castro (2-run homer), David DeJesus and Cody Ransom all homered for the Cubs, which allowed them to finish with 35 home runs for the month of April. 5/01- Scott Feldman continued the hot starting pitching trend when he went the distance for the first time in his career. He allowed just two run on three hits and struck out 12 batters. He also produced at the plate, hitting an RBI double off of former Cub Andrew Cashner. Cashner took the loss and was charged with five runs on six hits and four walks over four innings, thus making the Cubs the winner of that trade…for now. 5/02- Travis Wood retired the first fourteen batters he faced; he was dominant and had a great outing. He allowed only three runs on four hits in 7 2/3 innings of work and would have gotten the win until it all unraveled in the eighth inning. The Padres scored four runs in the eighth and take away the victory despite Wood’s great effort. The Cubs defense was pretty amazing in the first few frames, including an awesome catch by Anthony Rizzo. Scott Hairston hit his third home run and is showing signs of heating up. Looking Ahead The Cubs continue their home stand with three games against the Reds (the first of which they just lost), a makeup game vs. the Rangers on Monday and then the Cardinals come to town for a quick two-game series. Cincinnati Reds vs. Chicago Cubs Saturday May 4, 2013 @ 12:05 p.m. CT Tony Cingrani, LHP (2-0, 1.50 ERA) vs. Jeff Samardzija, RHP (1-4, 3.35 ERA) Cincinnati Reds vs. Chicago Cubs Sunday May 5, 2013 @ 1:20 p.m. CT Mat Latos, RHP (2-0, 1.83 ERA) vs. Edwin Jackson, RHP (0-4, 6.27 ERA) Texas Ranger vs. Chicago Cubs Monday May 6, 2013 @ 7:05 p.m. CT Nick Tepesch, RHP (2-2, 3.54 ERA) vs. Scott Feldman, RHP (2-3, 3.34 ERA) Thank you so much for reading and as always, Go Cubs! -Ivy
