There is a report out of Japan that 25 year old right handed pitcher Yu Darvish will ask his current team, the Nippon Ham Fighters, to make him available to Major League teams this offseason. Darvish finished this season for the Ham Fighters with a 16-8 record with a 1.44 ERA, 276 strikeouts in and 36 walks in 232 innings. In comparison, Hideo Nomo finished his final season in Japan with a 17-12 record with a 3.70 ERA and 276 strikeouts in 243 innings.

Darvish's fastball sits between 92-94, but can top out at 97. He has a six pitch arsenal including a two and a four-seam fastball, hard slider, curveball, splitter and changeup. Scouts say that he has plus makeup and projects as a frontline Major League starter with his 6'5" 190 pound frame.

Darvish dominated the 2009 World Baseball Classic pitching for Japan. His accumulated a 2-1 record with a 2.08 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 13 innings, including a save against the United States team in which he gave up one hit and struck out two in one inning.

Japanese players made available to American teams are bidded on in a closed posting process. After the four-day bidding process concludes, the Major League team has 30 days to work out a contract with the player. Should they agree on a deal, the player's Japanese team receives the bid amount put up by the Major League team. If the player and team do not agree to a deal, the fee is not paid and the player returns to the Japanese team.

The New York Yankees of all teams will in all likelihood be looking to add starting pitching this offseason. Ace CC Sabathia has an opt out clause that he may or may not accept. Either way, the Yankees will be looking to fill in their rotation behind him and Ivan Nova. Look for the Yankees to bid heavily should Darvish be made available.
