For years, Tampa Bay has had trouble attracting fans to Tropicana Field. The franchise tried changing the team name (from Devil Rays to Rays) and fielding a winning team (playoffs in three of the last five years, including an American League pennant). With those methods still not boosting attendance all that much, though, it’s time for bobbleheads. While the Rays have their usual bevy of promotions going on this year, the winners have to be a pair of bobbleheads honoring manager Joe Maddon and All-Star pitcher David Price. Maddon’s figurine is the classic garden gnome, and the first 10,000 fans coming April 24 can get their hands on one. Here it is - the @raysjoemaddon gnome to be given away at #Rays April 24 game http://t.co/NbDvl1hr— Marc Topkin (@TBTimes_Rays) February 16, 2013 The other bobblehead pays homage to Price’s bulldog, Astro (not conveniently named, considering Houston is switching leagues this year). Fans 14 years old and younger will get the bobblehead while supplies...

Tampa Bay Rays to give away Joe Maddon gnome

The Tampa Bay Rays released their promotional schedule recently and one of the more interesting giveaways is a Joe Maddon gnome. “It’s somewhat overwhelming to be characterized in gnomedom like that. It’s really difficult to describe that feeling that someone has at that moment. I’m pleased, I’m honored, I’m humbled by the entire event. And hopefully I won’t scare too...

Luke Scott brings boar's head to spring training

Tampa Bay Rays DH Luke Scott is a bizarre man. When Scott showed up at Rays Spring Training on Monday, he showed up with the head of a boar in tow. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times shared the picture to the right, and Gary Shelton of the Times has the full story on the head. Scott bounced through the clubhouse carrying a large boar's head — the first one he killed with...

Yunel Escobar gets fresh start with Rays

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. The past is a distant memory for Yunel Escobar, something hed rather sweep into a dustbin and forget forever. For good reason, he wants to keep his gaze fixed on the path ahead. His uniform has changed, his colors are different, the clubhouse culture he enters with the Tampa Bay Rays is loose and free. Still, a player's record is never discarded so simply...

Rays first baseman Luke Scott arrived at spring training with a boar’s head (photo)

Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Luke Scott — a unique, eccentric fellow with interesting theories and thoughts on a variety of topics — arrived at spring training on Sunday afternoon with a curious object, something one wouldn’t typically consider a necessary accessory for a major league ballplayer to have in his possession as he embarks on camp: A boar’s head. And no, we are...

Rays reliever Joel Peralta won't play in WBC

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. A dream of playing in the World Baseball Classic is over for Tampa Bay Rays reliever Joel Peralta. On Sunday morning, Peralta said he wont compete in the upcoming event, held March 2-19, because he wants to preserve his health for the regular season. The 36-year-old had been selected to participate for the Dominican Republic in the tournament, held once every...

Tampa Bay Rays Luke Scott Brings Boar’s Head To Spring Training

Last season Rays DH Luke Scott told the Tampa Tribune that he had hunted down a wild boar and killed it with a spear–turns out he wasn’t lying. As reported by Yahoo Sports Scott brought in the severed wild boar’s head for ‘show and tell’, a ritual manager Joe Maddon has continued on in spring training. While there has yet to be any photographic proof of the bizarre...

The Tampa Bay Rays Are The Best At Giving Stuff Away

You wish, Yankees. With Spring Training here, it’s time for the most important part of any Major League Baseball preseason – checking out what kind of free stuff teams will be giving away this season. Naturally, most major market and successful teams worth a lick will be giving away the standards like t-shirts and hats, but teams that don’t do as well in drawing fans are sort...

New motivations await Evan Longoria

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. The chants are common. They come when theres a pause in Evan Longorias routine, a break in his process. They come from voices of all variety kids, men and women, young and old each a hint at how far the former junior-college transfer has traveled and the distance he wants to go. They burst from fans lips like kernels popping in dry heat. One comes late Sunday...

Rays’ Luke Scott Brings a Boar’s Head To Spring Training… Naturally

This is another one of these stories where I just tell myself to keep calm and write on. Rays’ outfielder Luke Scott made some headlines this week at Spring Training by bringing a boar’s head into the locker room. It was apparently a part of his show-n-tell. According to TBO: Luke Scott promised to bring something interesting this morning for “show and tell” and he did...

Luke Scott shows off his latest kill, a boar’s head

Luke Scott is a gun-toting American. We know that from his previous outbursts. Scott is a little more reserved now when it comes to that kind of stuff. But, oh boy, does he still like to show off his recent kills: #Rays Luke Scott was showing off a boar’s head from a spear-hunting trip today. Our @gary_shelton is writing about it twitter.com/TBTimes_Rays/s… — Marc Topkin ...

Player Profile #74: Ben Zobrist | 2B, SS, OF | TB

If I had one word to describe Ben Zobrist it would be patient. Now, I don’t know him personally so he could be the most hot-headed man on the planet, but at the plate he is cool as a cucumber. His 37.4% swing rate was tied for second lowest with Kevin Youkilis (Joe Mauer was first with 35.4%), but Zobrist didn’t swing for good reason; he walked 14.5% of the time. Not surprisingly...

Luke Scott’s Wild Boar Head Is Just As Excited About Spring Training As He Is (Photo)

The good vibes of spring training, and the beginning of baseball after a long winter, cover a lot of ills. Players get second chances, guys are excited to be around each other, and things that wouldn’t be acceptable in the thick of a competitive season — or, perhaps, in the rest of humanity — are laughed at and accepted. Enter the boar head. Luke Scott, who has one of the stranger...

Rays to give away funny Maddon bobbleheads

On Saturday, the Tampa Bay Rays released their promotional schedule for the upcoming season. One thing to keep in mind here is that the Rays ranked dead last in attendance last year, so any added incentive to lure fans to Tropicana Field is a plus.I suppose this is what drove the team to develop the Joe Maddon Gnome Bobblehead. It features the Tampa Bay skipper in his signature black...

Tampa Bay Rays sign DH Jack Cust to rookie contract, invite to camp

According to multiple reports on Twitter this morning the Tampa Bay Rays have signed Jack Cust to a rookie contract and have invited him to camp. Cust, 34, will likely compete for a DH position with the team and could potentially add some much needed power to the lineup if he can regain his form from 2007 through 2009 while a member of the Oakland Athletics. Cust has bounced around...

Rays’ David Price: “This could be my last year here.”

After the Rays and David Price avoided arbitration back in January, many believed there may be hope that the 2012 Cy Young winner will stay in Tampa Bay for the long term. However, at the end of the day it’s still a business and Price realizes that.  “I do know this could be my last year here — or half-year, whatever it is,” Price told FOXSports.com during an interview....
