Cleveland Indians right-hander Josh Tomlin was sent to the disabled list last week after experiencing some wrist pain. He was a late scratch for his start in Boston on Saturday, with Zach McAllister getting the call and temporarily taking his spot in the rotation while he’s on the 15-day DL. Apparently, Tomlin’s injury is an extremely rare affliction known as intersection syndrome. Here’s how rare, according to Tribe trainer Lonnie Soloff (via Sheldon Ocker of Akron Beacon-Journal):

“Our hand specialist [Dr. Tom Graham of the Cleveland Clinic] has never seen this in a pitcher,’’ Soloff said. “And there are only two cases in the [medical] literature over the last 50 years.’’

Despite the alarming paucity of cases and background, the injury will not keep Tomlin on the shelf too long. He did some throwing yesterday before the Indians game against Miami, tossing it from 75 feet at Progressive Field. Soloff told Dennis Manoloff of the Plain Dealer that their “feeling is it will be in the rearview mirror quite quickly.” If his rehab program continues smoothly, he’ll likely be back pitching in the next two to three weeks.
