Dejan Kovacevic reported this evening that Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano told the Cubs he would not accept a trade to the Pirates. Soriano would have been an intriguing trade target as he is still a very productive player and is signed through the 2014 season. He’s owed $18 million in each of the next two seasons, so the only way he was going anywhere was if Chicago picked up quite a bit of his salary, but the Cubs expressed that they would be willing to take on salary in any trades in return of prospects. Soriano also declined a trade to San Francisco, so it is safe to say he has a pretty short list overall. I mean, Pittsburgh and San Francisco are two pretty awesome cities. Perhaps he just really wants to stay in one place. The now 36-year-old is hitting .272/.322/.499 with 19 home runs and is well like by defensive metrics ever since moving to left field. In fact, he leads all Major League left fielders this season in UZR.

Guy Proposes to Girlfriend on Big Screen at Chicago Cubs Game While She is in the Bathroom (Video)

Seriously, I thought this terrible fad of purposing to someone at a sporting event was over?  Haven't seen it in a while until now.  Serves this guy right that his new fiance was in the bathroom taking a pisser while the question came onto the big screen at the Cubs game last night.  Must have had something to do with the Cubs curse.  Video is below if you can bear to watch...

Cubs, Rangers complete Soto deal

The Chicago Cubs completed a deal Tuesday that sends catcher Geovany Soto to the Texas Rangers for minor league right-hander Jake Brigham and a player to be named or cash consideration. The deal was reported on Monday night as Soto was pulled from the Cubs' game against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the sixth inning, but was not finalized until Tuesday morning, according to MLB...

Cubs Gamble on Vizcaino, Sell Low on Soto

“As a whole, not specifically regarding potential deals, we need to add a lot of pitching to the system. It’s not enough to have a handful or two. You need waves and waves coming through your system, and we don’t have that. We hardly have even one wave coming, so we need to rebuild a lot of pitching depth.” –Theo Epstein, July 18, 2012 On Monday night, the Chicago Cubs...

A.J. Burnett Masterful in One-Hit Shutout of Cubs

Final: Pirates 5, Cubs 0 WP: A.J. Burnett (13-3, 3.27 ERA) LP: Casey Coleman (0-2, 7.40 ERA) A.J. Burnett continues his amazing bounce back season. Tonight, he carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Adrian Cardenas‘ pinch-hit single to right field with two outs was all the Cubs could muster off the veteran right-hander. Burnett finished the game with a complete game shutout...

The Waiver Wire: Travis Snider

The Major League Baseball Trade Deadline has come and gone with the usually flurry of deals as some teams prepared to make a final push to lock up a playoff spot while others made deals with an eye to the future. This is the same strategy you should be using over the final two months of your fantasy baseball season, too, especially if you are in a dynasty, keeper or a league which...

Ryan Dempster is Headed to Texas

The most surprising trade of the day came minutes before the clock ran out on MLB’s trade deadline.  The Chicago Cubs dealt right hander Ryan Dempster to the Texas Rangers for two minor league prospects. Dempster, 35, will be a two month rental unless the Rangers can get a deal done with him during the offseason.  Rumors leading up to this deal going down, were that the Los Angeles...

It's been 14 years since series meant so much to Pirates

It might be a little too early in the season to hype any series as a big one. However, the fact of the matter is that the Pirates will be playing their biggest series in 14 years when they travel to Cincinnati to meet the Reds in a three-game set beginning on Friday night at Great American Ball Park. The Pirates are in second place in the National League Central and trail the...

Game 104: Pirates 8 Cubs 4

Over the course of the last week the Pirates have won five games, but I've been saying ad nauseum that they haven't really played that well. Part of the reason for that is that they've been winning close games while leaving tons of runners on base and most of their wins have felt like they more stumbled into them than beat their opponents. Last night bucked the trend...
