Sept 25-27

The Mariners hit the last stretch of the season hoping to show the world they are ready to compete.

Pitching match ups: Game 154: RHP – Erasmo Ramirez vs. RHP – Zack Greinke

Matchup | Preview

The Angels are making a push to make it to the playoffs, they are currently just two games behind Oakland for a wildcard standing.

The Mariners should feel a rush of adrenalin knowing that these games mean something, even if it isn’t to them.

Ramirez vs. Greinke

As Ramirez takes the hill on this important game you van bet that Eric Wedge will have his mental checklist out for next season’s starting rotation.

Ramirez was brilliant in his last start, but Tom Wilhelmson was unable to convert the save.  Ramirez has held right handed batters to a mere .186 this season which is impressive for a 22 year old rookie.  This kid has some potential.

  • Current Line: 1-2 / 3.28 ERA / 8 BB / 39 SO / 0.96 WHIP

Greinke had a similar game to Ramirez in his last start, so this game could turn out to be a bit of a pitchers duel.  Greinke is 5-1 in his last 10 starts and he generally pitches at least 7 innings.

That workhorse mentality is exactly the kind of push the Angels need to make the playoffs. The M’s don’t have a lot of experience with this 28-year-old right hander this season, in the past he has held Seattle hitters at bay.

Don’t expect to see Chone Figgins in the game as he has a career .084 average against Greinke.

  • Current Line: 14-5 / 3.47 ERA / 50 BB / 184 SO / 1.19 WHIP
Game 155: RHP – Felix Hernandez vs. RHP – C.J. Wilson

Any hope of Hernandez walking away with the Cy Young Award likely slipped away with performance in September. So far this month he has a 6.38 ERA.  Ouch.  Of course if he threw another perfect game that could change things.

Who is up for some more historic moments?

Think Felix has another perfecto in him?

  • Current line: 13-8 / 2.85 ERA / 51 BB / 207 SO / 1.10 WHIP.

C.J. Wilson is over rated and over paid, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a threat.  The M’s have struggled against left handed pitching all season and if anything can be said about C.J. it is that he really doesn’t know how to use is handedness as a weapon.

Seattle has only been able to get to Wilson for 1 run in 6 innings this season.

As a team the M’s are hitting only .239 against Wilson so things are a bit dismal.  However the southpaw has been showing signs of fatigue which could leave his team questioning his ability to get the job done – even against Seattle.

The Mariners are an anemic 1-for-39 with runners in scoring position over the last five games.

  • Current Line: 12-10 / 3.82 ERA / 83 BB / 161 SO / 1.33 WHIP
Game 156:  RHP – Hisashi Iwakuma vs. RHP – Dan Haren

Iwakuma started out the year as a reliever, filled in as a closer and finished as a starter.

Since entering the starting rotation the 31-year-old rookie has gone 6-4 with a 2.84 ERA.  If only he could have started the year off like that, maybe the Angels and the M’s would be in opposite places at this point in the season.

The Angels only have a total of 61 at bats against Iwakuma but so far he has done well against the division rivals, holding them to just a .197 average.

  • Current Line: 7-5 / 3.41 ERA / 42 BB / 91 SO / 1.29 WHIP

While other pitchers are wearing down, Haren appears to be heating up. September has been his best month of the season, with an ERA of an even 3.  He is 2-1 against Seattle this season.

  • Current Line: 12-11 / 4.35 ERA / 38 BB /  131 SO / 1.30 WHIP
M’s vs. Angels Series Predictions

Game 1:  Prediction:  Win (Mariners 2- Angels 1)

Game 2:  Prediction:  Win (Mariners 3 – Angels 1)

Game 3:  Prediction:  Loss (Mariners 3 – Angels 5)

Notes:

The Mariners are an anemic 1-for-39 with runners in scoring position over the last five games.

Angels OF Mike Trout is hitting .136 (3-for-22) over his last seven contests and is two runs scored away from matching Vladimir Guerrero’s franchise record of 124, set in 2004.

Seattle 1B Justin Smoak is batting .345 in September and his lifted his average from .190 on Aug. 31 to .209.
