With spring training still weeks away and with major league ballplayers chomping at the bit to head south in order to begin preparations for the regular season, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that some of them are willing to do just about anything to fill up these last conceivably grueling moments without baseball. And according to New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira, he will be spending his remaining moments of idleness performing on Broadway.
Joking with WFAN hosts Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton on Tuesday by saying, “Yes, I have decided to expand my array of talents,” and then claiming he would be portraying Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, Teixeira then let the cat out of the bag that he would be making a cameo appearance in Tuesday night’s production of Rock of Ages at the Helen Hayes Theater in New York.

Saying, “I’m really excited,” the Yankee revealed he will be on stage two or three times during the performance of the 1980s hair metal era musical, adding, “I have some tight leather pants I’m going to be rocking,” and also claimed he’s been growing out a mullet for the last few months to adequately make his appearance seem more retro in light of the show’s theme.
But don’t count on Teixeira showing off his pipes by way of song. His cameo is speaking only. “They have a great product,” Teixeira insisted. “They wouldn’t risk the reputation of the show by letting me belt out a few lines.” That’s a shame. I would love to see video of Teixeira serenade the crowd with “Sister Christian,” croon “More than Words,” or belt out “Rock You Like A Hurricane” to the rafters. That would probably be more amusing than watching Tom Cruise in the film version. Man, that was awkward. So, I’ve heard. It’s not like I’ve seen it. I’m more of a Mama Mia kind of guy.
