Monday’s homestand finale was similar to the previous stretch of games in that it ended with a Miami Marlins loss.   The Arizona Diamondbacks won the series with a 9-5 victory that featured poor defense by Miami.    With the loss, the Marlins fell deeper into last place in the National League East and now sit at 8-14 for the season.

Mark Buehrle didn’t fare too well in this start allowing seven runs in eight innings of work.   Only four of those runs were earned due to two fielding miscues by the Marlins but the lefty was off his game for the most part regardless.  Buehrle who usually works at a rapid pace could be seen pacing around the mound and pausing between pitches several times.   Normally an efficient pitcher, Buehrle had difficulty finding the plate and threw 94 pitches in his five innings.   The loss dropped the veteran to 1-4 on the year and lifted his E.R.A to 3.34.   Daniel Jennings made his major league debut in the sixth with a scoreless inning.   Ryan Webb worked the next two frames in scoreless fashion in which he struck out two Arizona hitters.   In the ninth, Heath Bell’s season long struggles continued as he loaded the bases with nobody out.   The Diamondbacks went on to score two runs to raise the closer’s E.R.A to 10.80.

At one point in this game, the Marlins trailed 7-0 and looked in line for another cold day at the plate but that changed when pinch-hitter Donnie Murphy hit a two run home run in the fifth inning.    The blast was Murphy’s second of the season which gives the reserve infielder more home runs than several of his teammates who play regularly.    Austin Kearns added his second home run of the year as well in the seventh on a day he started in place of Logan Morrison.

Tuesday will begin a nine game road trip for the Marlins with the first of three in San Francisco.  The scheduled starters are Ricky Nolasco and Matt Cain.
