After a spectacular rookie season, Marlins right-hander Jose Fernandez was named a finalist for National League Rookie of the Year and NL Cy Young honors on Tuesday night. Fernandez went 12-6 with a 2.19 ERA in 28 starts before being shut down with an innings limit in mid-September. He recorded the second-lowest ERA in the majors. During 10 second-half starts, Fernandez went 7-1 with a 1.32 ERA, best in the big leagues. On Monday, the 21-year-old was named NL Outstanding Rookie at the MLBPA Players Choice Awards, as voted on by his peers. While the franchise boasts three Rookie of the Year winners -- Dontrelle Willis (2003), Hanley Ramirez (2006) and Chris Coghlan (2009) -- no Marlins pitcher has ever won the Cy Young. Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig and Cardinals right-hander Shelby Miller are Fernandezs fellow rookie finalists. Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw (16-9, 1.83 ERA, 232 strikeouts) and Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright (19-9, 2.94 ERA, 219 SO) are the other Cy Young candidates. The BBWAA awards will be handed out Monday (Rookie of the Year) and Nov. 13 (Cy Young).

Marlins owner just sold painting for slightly less than team's total payroll

Jeffrey Loria, the owner of the Miami Marlins, has zero interest investing his mass fortune into the roster of the team. This man has oodles of money and convinced the city government to use tax-payer money on a brand new stadium in a terrible area of Miami, and he gutted the roster before the inaugural season at it concluded. Needless to say, this man saves money whenever he can...

Canadian mascot gets body slammed by fan

Watching mascots get tackled is usually hilarious, but this incident seems to be a bit more serious. Police in Victoria, British Columbia, are considering filing charges against one Western Hockey League spectator after the fan body slammed Victoria Royals mascot Marty the Marmot to the ice during a game of musical chairs, according to Island Sports News. The altercation occurred...

Marlins Owner Jeffrey Loria Sells Painting For $32 Million

The rich get richer… Jeffrey Loria aka Darth Loria, if you’re a Marlins fan, is a pretty horrible owner, but the one thing the guy does have a knack for is getting money. On Monday Loria sold an Alberto Giacometti portrait for the sum of $32.6 million, at an art auction in New York. Mind you, that’s just $7 million less than the entire Marlins payroll–seriously. In case...

Giancarlo Stanton ‘Not Available’ in Trade, Will Be Marlins’ Building Block, According to GM Dan Jennings

Just because you wish and wish and wish doesn’t mean something is going to come true. Teams are discovering that harsh reality when it comes to prized slugger Giancarlo Stanton, whom the Marlins apparently have no intention of trading away this winter or at any point in the foreseeable future. “Mr. Stanton is not available,” Marlins general manager Dan Jennings said during...

2013 Offseason Primer: Miami Marlins

The Marlins won the winter following the 2011 season. Last winter, they clearly did not, trading nearly every player of consequence on their team between the All-Star Break and Christmas. This winter, the Marlins seem to have more of a plan in place. They've got a young core, and there's really only one player on their team that will likely draw a lot of interest in the trade...

Are Sox Setting Sights On Giancarlo Stanton?

(Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports)Scott Lauber of The Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox may be poised to make a bold move in an effort to defend their 2013 World Series crown. With a bevy of top and middle-range prospects in their organization, Boston may pursue a deal with the Miami Marlins for 24-year old slugger Giancarlo Stanton. With potential losses of four free agents—most...
