Doumit has long admired the Twins

FORT MYERS, Fla. The Minnesota Twins had issues with health at first base and catcher. They also lost a pair of right fielders in free agency. Now, the Twins are hoping veteran Ryan Doumit can fill in at any of those positions whenever they need him. Minnesota signed the versatile Doumit to a one-year contract this offseason, and he's now in his first spring training with his...

Sano emerges as a top prospect for Twins

FORT MYERS, Fla. Twins prospect Miguel Sano is a man among boys. Not literally, of course. At just 18 years old, Sano is one of the youngest players in Minnesota's minor league camp this spring. Judging by his baby-faced appearance, you'd think he was perhaps 15. But when Sano takes the field with the other Twins minor leaguers at the Lee County Sports Complex, he turns...

Minnesota Twins have ultimate underdog story in spring training

While spring training can be devastating for those who have to face the reality of not making a team, it also brings out a great deal of happiness for some, especially for those players who have labored a long time to reach a certain level.  Down in Fort Myers, FL where the Minnesota Twins train there seems to be one really happy, perhaps giddy player.       The guy who we...

Blackburn sharp again, but Orioles prevail

FORT MYERS (AP) Nick Blackburn said he's throwing better than ever. The results back him up. The Twins' right-hander, who ended last year on the disabled list before having offseason forearm surgery, gave up one hit and no runs over four innings of a Minnesota Twins split-squad's 3-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday. "I honestly don't remember having...

Orioles 3, Twins 1

Nick Blackburn had another impressive start, striking out three and allowing just one hit in four scoreless innings for a Minnesota Twins split squad in a 3-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday. The right-hander, who is coming off an inconsistent, injury-slowed 7-10 season, has given up four hits and no runs through seven innings this spring. Orioles first baseman Chris Davis...

Twins 2, Red Sox 1

Jon Lester worked on something he hopes he doesn't have to spend much time doing during the regular season: pitching out of jams. Joe Mauer made his first spring training start at first base for a Minnesota Twins split squad in a 2-1 win over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night. Lester walked one and hit two batters while giving up two runs and five hits in four innings. He...
