The New York Mets and Houston Astros haven’t had the season they were hoping for. It’s not that either team was really planning on being a World Series contender but both young squads were hoping to show some progress.

As the two teams prepare for a three-game set over the weekend, the Mets find themselves in fourth in the National League East while the Astros have the worst record in baseball.

Experts making their MLB picks know that life has been particularly bad for the Astros lately. They enter Friday’s contest on a seven-game losing streak. Overall, they’ve dropped 34 of their last 40 games.

They’ve got two of their three starters set for this weekend series as Jordan Lyles will start on Friday and Lucas Harrell will take to the mound on Sunday. Without question, it’s been a tough year for Astros starters as Harrell – at 10-9 – is the only Astros pitcher with a winning record.

As for the Mets, they’ll counter with Jon Niese, R.A. Dickey and Jeremy Hefner. To contrast, Niese and Dickey have

combined for 25 wins whereas the entire Astros starting staff has combined for just 32.

The Mets aren’t exactly flying high coming into this series either as they have dropped five straight. It’s hard to believe that they were 46-39 at one point this season as they have won just 11 of their last 40 contests.

The Mets should have a bit of an advantage playing at home where they are 28-34 this season. The Astros are the league’s worst road team at just 12-51. Only two other teams in all of baseball have less than 20 road wins: the Milwaukee Brewers (19) and the Chicago Cubs (17).

Don’t look for Houston to be very competitive this weekend. They have been outscored by a whopping 186 runs this season, which is 55 more than any other team.
