On Thursday afternoon, the New York Mets opened the 2012 season with a 1-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves:

Making his first start since undergoing surgery on September 14, 2010 to repair a torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder, Johan Santana allowed two hits and two walks, while striking out five over five scoreless innings.  After a Martin Prado single in the top of the first, Santana retired the next 12 batters he faced before a Matt Diaz double ended the streak.  Following the two out hit from Diaz, Johan quickly jumped ahead 0-2 to rookie Tyler Pastornicky before throwing eight of the next nine pitches out of the strike zone to load the bases. After a brief mound visit from pitching coach Dan Werthan and 40,000 Citi Field faithful standing on their feet, Santana escaped the jam by educing Michael Bourn to tap  a grounder back to the mound.

The Mets bullpen followed Santana and tossed four scoreless innings; including a huge two outs by left hander Tim Byrdak; who is less than four weeks removed from knee surgery.  The bird man relieved Ramon Ramirez in the top of the seventh inning and delivered back-to-back strike outs of Jose Constanza and Michael Bourn to strand the tying run on third.

Mets Offense:

  • David Wright drove in the game only run with an RBI single in the 6th.  Wright now has a hit in 8 straight opening day games.
  • Josh Thole and Daniel Murphy each collected two hits.
  • Andres Torres scored the games only run, but was forced to leave the game early after injuring his calf chasing down a fly ball in the 7th.
