The New York Mets went with their all ‘home-grown’ line-up this afternoon and picked right up where they left off late Friday night, only this time they didn’t come up short against the Chicago Cubs.

While Jordany Valdespin and Ike Davis made their presence felt as pinch hitters in the 9th inning of last night’s contest, today they provided an early punch that was more than enough for Dillon Gee to work with.  Valdespin got things started with a solo home run to right in the second inning and Ike Davis followed with a 2-run shot in the third.  The drives both came of Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija and provided Dillon Gee with a 3-0 cushion that he would not relinquish.

Gee tossed a career high-tying eight innings today, allowing one run and seven hits without issuing a walk before handing the ball over to Bobby Parnell.  Parnell gave up a leadoff double to Cubs rookie Anthony Rizzo but settled down to secure his second save in as many chances while filling in for Frank Francisco.  With the win Gee improved to 6-7 on the year and thanks to the his effort the Mets recorded their major league-best 23rd game in which they’ve held an opponent to one run or less.  The 26-year-old has now posted a 3.07 ERA over his last four starts to lower his season earned run average to a respectable 4.10.

Today was just the second time New York put out a completely home-grown starting this season and they improved to 2-0 in these games to keep their perfect track record in tact.

With Jonathon Niese scheduled to pitch tomorrow and another righty in Ryan Dempster on the mound, it’s conceivable that Terry Collins may try to serve the Cubs another home-grown brew as the Mets look to take their third straight series and win their 8th game in their last 11 tries.
