The kid strikes again!
Will Middlebrooks goes 3 for 5 including an RBI single in the seventh which would be the winning run as the Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles, 8-6.
It was an all around great effort from the offense, as everyone in the batting order got a hit and almost everyone scored a run (Salty was the only one who failed to cross home plate.) and some came in some special ways. Middlebrooks was able to force his way home by getting Tommy Hunter to balk. David Ortiz was able to launch one deep into right for the tenth of his year.
All the runs were needed to as Clay Buchholz completely fell apart in the third inning. He lost all control of his fastball and got himself into a bases loaded, no out situation. Buchholz wouldn't get away scot free as he walked two runs in and allowed another one on an infield single. The Orioles got their fourth and final run of the inning as the Sox managed to get a double play.
Buchholz also gave up a solo shot to Chris Davis in the following inning to give Buchholz his seventh start allowing five runs or more. He managed to work into the sixth and that's when he was given the hook. He walked four and struck out two and his ERA now stands at a unhealthy 7.84 ERA.
Andrew Miller came in and pitched 1 2/3 innings of no hit ball and got his first win of the year. Miller has been thriving in the limited time he's been out there: he's just allowed three hits & a walk in seven appearances this season, very similar to Rich Hill last season.
Speaking of Hill, he had a rough night himself as he gave up three straight base hits in the eighth and allowing his first run since April 29th, his first appearance of the year. After he got Davis to ground out, Vicente Padilla got the next two outs and continues to dominate in these situations: he's stranded all 13 runners he's inherited this season. I never thought I'd be so happy to see Padilla in these situations.
Aceves came in and got a 1-2-3 inning for his tenth save and he's also been great in the closer role. This patchwork bullpen has been doing a hell of a job this season.
BEST OF MAXIM
It's decision time for the Red Sox. Kevin Youkilis is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Tuesday, after wrapping up a rehab stint in Pawtucket with a bang. The Red Sox third baseman went 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and an RBI on Monday, while also playing nine innings at third base. After going 4-for-11 with a couple of doubles and a handful of walks in three...
Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
"Felix had his good stuff," said Bobby Valentine. "He was battling the whole way. He just happened to pick the night when the opposing pitcher (Brian Matusz) had good stuff and shut us down...
Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington says outfielder Cody Ross has a broken bone in his left foot and could be sidelined 6-8 weeks.
Ross fouled a ball off his foot in Friday night's game against Philadelphia. An MRI on Monday revealed a small fracture.
Cherington says Ross will get a second opinion in Baltimore, but he is almost certainly headed to the disabled list...
In shipping down to Philadelphia, Jonathon Papelbon's notorious entrance to "Shipping Up to Boston" by Boston's own Dropkick Murphys, is no longer played throughout the Fenway Park PA system, leaving "Sweet Caroline" as the lone Fenway sing-a-long. But a few months into the 2012 season, some new Fenway favorites have emerged. Below is a complete list of...
PHILADELPHIA –– Ryan Sweeney drew rave reviews for his diving catch in Saturday's victory. But the snag may have produced negative ramifications. The Red Sox outfielder admitted to experiencing headaches in the clubhouse as a result of crashing to the ground on the play, and he insinuated that he could have suffered whiplash. Sweeney underwent tests to determine whether he...
The Boston Red Sox have placed reliever Rich Hill on the 15-day disabled list with tightness in his left elbow.
Hill had Tommy John surgery on the elbow a year ago and will be examined on Monday.
Boston recalled RHP Mark Melancon from Triple-A Pawtucket to replace Hill in the bullpen and activated him for Sunday's game against the Washington Nationals.
Hill (1-0) has made...
Adrian Gonzalez may have won a Gold Glove at first base, so playing right field can't be that much harder, right? Gonzo is playing outfield on Tuesday night to let Will Middlebrooks and Kevin Youkilis man the corner infield spots together, but NESN Nation's Dan Duquette isn't all that worried about any potential misadventures in right. See why in the video above. Join...
The Red Sox continued to make the most out of interleague play by winning two of three this weekend in Philadelphia against a Phillies team that has had a rough year. Boston's struggles are also well documented, but as they get set to open a big week against AL East rivals, the Sox are just one game under .500. That's nothing to throw a parade over, but with the way things...
The Red Sox really don't want to get over .500.
A pitcher's duel went in Baltimore's favor tonight as the Red Sox couldn't touch Brian Matusz, who allowed just two hits and one walk against nine strikeouts in six and a third innings. The bullpen remained strong, splitting the remaining innings among Darren O'Day, Pedro Strop, and closer Jim Johnson.
The Red Sox had a hard time with the Baltimore pitching on Tuesday night, but one guy picked up right where he left off. Kevin Youkilis returned from the 15-day disabled list and scored Boston's only run on a homer in the fourth inning. Dustin Pedroia was among Youkilis' Red Sox teammates who were happy to see him back. He said that and more after the game on Red Sox Clubhouse Uncut.
With the rash of injuries in the Red Sox outfield, the Sox continue to dip into the Pawtucket Red Sox outfield. This time, it is veteran Scott Podsednik.

The 36-year-old outfielder is hitting .323 in nine games with Pawtucket this...

The Red Sox will have Daniel Bard, who is 3-5 with a 4.85 ERA, take the hill in this one. Bard didn't get off to a strong start last time out walking three of the first four batters that he faced. In...
Times are good for Ortiz, Saltalamacchia and the Boston Red Sox
These are the kind of series wins that good teams get done.
