PLAYERS: Miguel Cabrera
TEAMS: Detroit Tigers
Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera jokingly tossed his gum at Cleveland Indians left fielder Ryan Raburn as his former Tiger teammate was rounding the bases after hitting a home run in the fifth inning of Sunday's game at Comerica Park. It happened in the fifth inning as Raburn broke up a no-hitter by Tigers pitcher Jose Alvarez with a home run to left field which tied the game at 1-1. Raburn was in the middle of his home run trot and had just rounded second when Cabrera took some gum out of his mouth and lightly tossed it in Raburn's general direction as he passed by. Raburn's home run accounted for the only run the Indians scored in the game, as the Tigers won the game 4-1. H/T NIS. Visit us at and follow us on Twitter @HoldoutSports.

Jim Leyland Upset At Justin Verlander For Trying To Avoid Being Pulled From Game

An oddly tense moment occurred in Friday’s game between Tiger’s ace Justin Verlander and manager Jim Leyland. Verlander is a horse, so after 7 innings of pure domination he wasn’t ready to be pulled out. Jim Leyland would have none of it, though. On his way to the dugout Verlander purposely avoided Leyland who was waiting for him on the stairs to give him the infamous ...

Game 2012.60: Indians at Tigers

33-26, 1st place, 3.5 games ahead of Cle. Good win last night, great effort by everyone except for Jose Valverde. He was flat out awful. I am certain that he won’t be closing games much longer. I can’t help but wonder if Valverde is the cause for the Verlander/Leyland miff from last night. (Miff seems appropriate, as i don’t think it qualifies as an imbroglio). In case you...

Tigers' offense still can't deliver for Fister

One of these days, the Detroit Tigers are going to score double-digit runs when Doug Fister is pitching. Fister certainly deserves it. But that night was not Monday night in Kansas City. It looked somewhat promising when Miguel Cabrera hit his 18th home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the third inning to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. They were the first runs the Tigers had...

Detroit Tigers Draft Ben Verlander, Brother of Justin Verlander, in Round 14

The Detroit Tigers selected OF Ben Verlander, the younger brother of ace pitcher Justin Verlander, in Round 14 of this year’s MLB Draft. Officially drafted by the Detroit Tigers!!! WOW! So excited!! — Ben Verlander (@Verly32) June 8, 2013 Verlander hit .367 during his junior season at Old Dominion, with 11 home runs and 44 RBI. He figured to hear his name called at some point...

Miguel Cabrera Throws Gum at Ryan Raburn After Indians Outfielder Breaks Up No-Hitter (GIF)

Pitching a no-hitter in your big-league debut would be a pretty big deal. Detroit Tigers pitcher Jose Alvarez carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning of his first big league start, but Cleveland Indians outfielder Ryan Raburn rained on Alvarez’s parade, knocking a solo home run into left field to end the no-no bid. Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera was, naturally, frustrated...

Austin Jackson could return to the Tigers by next weekend

Tigers centerfielder Austin Jackson’s stint on the 15-day DL with a strained left hamstring has carried on much longer than expected. In fact Jackson’s time on the 15-day DL has morphed itself into a 4 week DL stay with relatively little news to report on during that time period. Well that’s until now. According to Jason Beck of, Jackson could begin a minor league rehab...

Game 2012.61: Indians at Tigers

34-26, 4.5 games up on Cle. (never mind the bad digital editing in the image above) Another good win for the Tigers yesterday afternoon, another poor showing for Valverde. Fielder’s bases clearing double put the Tigers in the lead for good, and Ricky P turned in his 3 straight quality start (and 7th in 10 games) to bring his ERA below 9. He’s a fantastic #5 guy. Remember all...

Tigers sweep Indians in three-game series

DETROIT (AP) -- Jose Alvarez pitched six impressive innings in his major league debut, and Don Kelly hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the sixth to help the Detroit Tigers finish a three-game sweep of the Cleveland Indians with a 4-1 victory Sunday. Alvarez (1-0) was starting because of Anibal Sanchez's shoulder tightness, and he held Cleveland hitless until Ryan Raburn&...

Alvarez impressive in major-league debut

Detroit -- It's pretty difficult to fill the shoes of Anibal Sanchez but rookie Jose Alvarez did a near-perfect imitation in his major-league debut Sunday. In front of a sellout crowd of 41,262 at Comerica Park, Alvarez appeared cool, calm and collected as he limited the Cleveland Indians to one run on three hits in six innings while walking one and striking out seven in a 4...

Choosing ASG pitchers? Take your pick

At least Jim Leyland has one easy decision with his American League All-Star pitching staff: Mariano Rivera -- leading the league with 23 saves in the final year of his historic career -- is as close to a no-brainer pick as one could imagine. Leyland won't have Rivera start the game as a tribute, as has been suggested by some. He would, however, like Rivera to get the ball with...

Tigers-Royals Preview

Maybe the Detroit Tigers have to worry more about a team further down in the division standings after sweeping the club that is right behind them. The Tigers have won four straight heading into Monday night's road matchup with a Kansas City Royals team seeking its first six-game win streak in two seasons. Detroit (35-26) extended its lead in the AL Central to a season-high...

Second Thoughts Game #61: Tigers 6, Indians 4

Player of the Game: Prince Fielder (2-for-5 with a three-run double in the second inning) The Leadoff And then it was six. For the second straight game, the Indians' late rally was too little too late as the Tribe dropped their sixth in a row losing to Detroit 6-4. Cleveland also drops their 10th straight ballgame on the road away from Progressive Field. Making the start in...
