At some point in his career as a Major League Baseball manager, Mike Matheny is going to experience life as a normal baseball team, one that doesn’t come within a couple games of the World Series. For now, he might as well enjoy one of the most successful starts to a managing career in the history of baseball, one that is even better than his predecessor and future Hall of Famer Tony La Russa. The Cardinals hired Matheny before the 2012 season even though he had no prior managing experience once La Russa retired after he won his second World Series title in St. Louis in 2011. And Matheny has had almost nothing but success since. Except for the three games the Cardinals lost to allow the San Francisco Giants the National League berth in the 2012 World Series, Matheny has had few disappointments. He led the Cardinals to an 88-74 record, a wild-card berth and one win from the World Series in 2012, and he has had an even better second season. The 2013 Cardinals tied the Boston Red Sox ...
