Mike Trout is the American League Rookie of the Year, and Bryce Harper is the National League Rookie of the Year. Trout unanimously won the American League honors, finishing in first place in all 28 ballots cast. Yoenis Cespedes of the Oakland Athletics finished second with 19 second place votes and six third place votes, and Yu Darvish of the Texas Rangers finished third with nine second place votes and 19 third place votes. Wei-Yin Chen of the Baltimore Orioles finished fourth after receiving a pair of third place votes, and Jarrod Parker of the A's was fifth with one third place vote. Coming into the night, the only real question was whether or not Trout would win the award unanimously after his fantastic season, and he did. Trout finished the season with a .963 OPS, 30 homers, and 49 stolen bases in just 139 games with the Angels. It was a historical season on many levels, and the 10.0 fWAR that Trout finished with will go down in history. Harper edged Wade Miley by seven points to win the NL award. Harper had 16 first place votes, eight seconds, and eight thirds, compared to Miley's 12 first place votes, 13 second place votes, and six thirds. Todd Frazier finished a distant third, picking up three first place votes, seven seconds, and nine thirds. Wilin Rosario of the Rockies was fourth with one first, two seconds, and a third, while Norichika Aoki of the Brewers was fifth after two seconds and five thirds. Yonder Alonso of the Padres, Matt Carpenter of the Cardinals, and Jordan Pacheco of the Rockies all received one third place vote to finish in a tie for fifth. Earlier today, we said Harper seemed like the best choice to win, though Miley gave him a run for his money. Harper, who turned 20 after the regular season ended, had 22 homers and 18 stolen bases while posting an .817 OPS in 139 games for the NL East champion Nationals. His 2012 season is regarded as among the best ever by a teenager, and now he has the hardware to prove it. [follow]
