As if Los Angeles Angels rookie phenom Mike Trout needed to prove anything else about his ability. On Sunday, the 21-year-old center fielder became the first major league rookie to ever hit 30 home runs and steal 40 bases. Trout hit his 30th homer off of Yu Darvish in the seventh inning.

Trout led off the game with a walk, then promptly stole his major league-best 48th base. Only two players in baseball history have ever hit 30 home runs and 50 stolen bases, and Trout could almost certainly become the third. The other guys to accomplish the feat were Eric Davis (1987) and Barry Bonds (1990).

Trout has been nothing short of incredible this season. He is leading the majors in stolen bases and runs (127), is third in the American League in batting batting average (.321) and has played Gold Glove-quality defense in center.

While Bryce Harper has had a solid rookie season, Trout has far out-shined Washington’s teenage star. In fact, the Angels’ rookie may have been the best player in baseball since the All-Star break.

It’s going to be a lot of fun to watch Trout play over the next decade or so. The kid is flat-out special and he’s having the kind of rookie season people will talk about for years.
