The minor league season is winding down and there are five affiliates with strong playoff possibilities. The DSL Pirates2 made the playoffs on Friday, Indianapolis clinched last night and the other three still have some work to do. The GCL Pirates have off today. The DSL regular season ended yesterday. Kris Johnson pitched well in his major league debut despite getting the loss (Photo Credit: David Hague) AAA: Indianapolis (76-59) @ Rochester (72-63) 1:05pm Probable starter: Kris Johnson (10-4, 2.41) Yesterday’s Result: Indianapolis 6, Rochester 4 Kris Johnson will make his 21st start for Indianapolis today. He has also pitched five times in relief and made one appearance for the Pirates. Johnson has pitched a total of 130.2 innings for Indianapolis, allowing 111 hits, six homers and 40 walks. He has 90 strikeouts, a 1.84 GO/AO ratio and a .232 BAA. In his last outing, he gave up three runs on three hits and three walks in 1.1 innings. He left with a minor injury and then made his next appearance in a Pirates uniform, when he gave up two runs on five hits and two walks in six innings of relief work. AA: Altoona (60-72) @ Richmond (67-65) 2:05pm Probable starter:  David Bromberg (6-10, 3.17) Yesterday’s Result: Altoona 3, Richmond 2 (game one) Altoona 13, Richmond 1 (game two) David Bromberg will make his 20th start for Altoona today. He has also pitched five times in relief and he made two starts for Indianapolis . He has not allowed more than one run in any of his last four starts. Bromberg has pitched 125 innings for Altoona, allowing 107 hits, five homers and 47 walks. He has 118 strikeouts, an 0.92 GO/AO ratio and a .235 BAA. He ranks tenth in the Eastern League in strikeouts. High-A: Bradenton (52-72 overall, 26-30 2nd half) @ Palm Beach (61-66) 5:05pm Probable starter: Pat Ludwig (2-2, 4.26) Yesterday’s Result: Palm Beach 2, Bradenton 1 Pat Ludwig will get his eighth start for Bradenton tonight. He has also pitched four times in relief for the Marauders. For West Virginia earlier in the season, Ludwig started once and pitched 23 times out of the bullpen. He was 6-0, 3.12 in 49 innings, with 44 strikeouts. As a starter with Bradenton, he has a 3.96 ERA in 37.1 innings. In his last start, he went seven innings, allowing one run on four hits and a walk. His previous outing was even better, seven shutout innings over this same Palm Beach team he faces today. Low-A: West Virginia (75-57 overall, 38-24 2nd half) @ Savannah (72-56) 2:05pm Probable starter:  John Kuchno (8-5, 3.99) Yesterday’s Result: West Virginia 6, Savannah 3 (game one) Savannah 6, West Virginia 1 (game two) John Kuchno will get his 22nd start of the year. He has also pitched twice in relief. Kuchno has thrown 117.1 innings, allowing 119 hits, seven homers and 40 walks. He has 85 strikeouts, an impressive 2.41 GO/AO ratio and a .267 BAA. In his last start, he went five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and no walks. He threw a one-hitter over six innings in his previous start. Kuchno is 5-2, 2.89 in his last ten starts. Short-Season A: Jamestown (38-25) @ Williamsport (30-32) 1:05pm Probable Starter:  Chad Kuhl (2-2, 2.43) Yesterday’s Result: Jamestown 2, Williamsport 1 Chad Kuhl will make his 11th start of the season today. He has thrown 40.1 innings, allowing 36 hits, no homers and five walks. Kuhl has 23 strikeouts, a 1.02 GO/AO ratio and a .238 BAA. In his last start, he went five innings, giving up two runs(both unearned) on four hits and no walks. He threw three shutout innings in his pro debut against Williamsport. Kuhl has allowed earned runs in just three of his ten starts. Rookie:  GCL Pirates (29-26) vs GCL Yankees1 (26-29) 12:00pm 8/26 Probable Starter: TBD Yesterday’s Result: Pirates 7, Yankees1 5 The GCL Pirates are off today. They will resume play on Monday, when they will play the first of four games left during the regular season. They are currently in first place in their division with a two game lead.
