First Pitch: Getting the 2010 Francisco Liriano

Francisco Liriano is looking like the 2010 version, or better. (Photo Credit: David Hague) I use the “small sample size” disclaimer a lot on this site, so it’s important to note that everything Francisco Liriano has done so far this season comes with that same disclaimer. Having said that, what Francisco Liriano has done so far is cause for some excitement. In five starts,...

Pirates Ride Jones’ River Shot, Superb Bullpen To 5-4 Comeback Win

Russell Martin slides past catcher Devin Mesoraco to score the game-winning run in the 11th inning. (Photo Credit: David Hague) When PNC Park was built in 2001 along the North Shore of the Allegheny River, the Pirates erected a sign on the right-field wall to track how many home runs the Bucs would hit into the river on the fly. Twelve years later: 1. After the Pirates (35-22) missed...

VIDEO: Garrett Jones hits ball into Allegheny River on the fly

Pittsburgh 1B Garrett Jones becomes the first Pirate to hit a home run into the Allegheny River on the fly on Sunday.  And it’s the first blast in over a decade to do so.  The shot almost took out two oblivious cyclists on the descent.  Watch the towering blast courtesy of MLB.com: Your browser does not support iframes. Pirates player hits home run out of ballpark, nearly hits a bicyclist

Pirates first baseman Garret Jones became only the second player ever to hit a home run ball out of PNC Park and into the Allegheny River. The eighth inning 2-run shot, which traveled a reported 468 feet, nearly took out a bicyclist on its way to the water. The only other blast to reach Allegheny River was by Daryle Ward of the Astros in 2002.  Pittsburgh would eventually win...

First Pitch: The Bullpen, The Depth, and The Regression

Pirates 5, Reds 4(11)

Garrett Jones is a level-headed guy. Even he gets mad sometimes. He was upset when he stepped into the batters' box in the eighth inning Sunday after striking out with runners on second and third in his previous at-bat. Jones then unleashed his anger by hitting a 463-foot game-tying home run Travis Snider then hit an RBI single with two outs in the 11th inning and the Pirates...

Chase d’Arnaud Recalled, Optioned To AAA, Harrison Down, Presley Up

INF Chase d’Arnaud has been recalled from his rehab assignment, reinstated from the D.L. and optioned to Indy. #Pirates — Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) May 31, 2013   Title seems kind of confusing, right? The reason for the recall is that he was on the DL. It’s just technical. He was immediately sent down to Triple…

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds – Game 57

Sunday is kids day at PNC Park!  Maybe they can let some kids bat! A potential sweep at home?  Not good guys. At least the Pirates let fans watch another team not score. It falls to Jeanmar Gomez.  Undefeated Jeanmar Gomez.   Mr. Pirates don’t lose when I start Jeanmar Gomez.  Seven innings of three…

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds – Game 56

Nothing confirmed here but rumors are running wild the Pirates have banned Penguins games from being shown on TVs that normally show non-Pirates stuff. We’ll know more tomorrow after the game is over, but it wouldn’t surprise me in the least.  This is a front office that has penis envy to the max.  Going after…

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Atlanta Braves – Game 58

What a win yesterday.  You could almost see that Garrett Jones homer coming after he struck out earlier in the game with men on.  I’m pretty sure two people could have caught that ball.  He had to have split it in half. Right back at it though, a plane ride to Atlanta and the grind…
