Roy Halladay pitched really good in 2011, as he did in 2010 when he won the NL Cy Young award. Unfortunately for Halladay, Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw was just a little bit better, and Kershaw took home his first career award. These two are the odds on favorites to win in 2012, but as usual, there are a lot of other starters looking to make some noise.
Favorites: Clayton Kershaw was awesome last year, and at his age, he's only getting better. Roy Halladay won the award the year before, and even though he's much older than Kershaw, he's just as good of a pitcher. Halladay has a pair of teammates in Cliff Lee (who is a former winner of the AL award) and Cole Hamels who are going to contend this season for the award as well. I'd also can't forget to mention Tim Lincecum of the Giants, who's won the NL award twice in his career.
Young Guns Blazing: There are a number of young studs in the league that will hope to contend for the award if everything goes wel...
BEST OF MAXIM
Clayton Kershaw must have been spending too much time around Andre Ethier.
Ethier missed Saturdays Freeway Series game against the Angels with a stomach bug, and it apparently made its way to Clayton Kershaw.
Kershaw started the season opener for the Dodgers on Thursday, despite battling the flu.
After three innings, however, the flu won and Kershaw left the game against the Padres...
Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies is the cream in the NL East. What starter on the Braves also goes deep into games frequently? The Apocalyptic Horsemen Stats are in my daily coverage.
TAL'S HANDY STATS
I am alternating a game-day 2012 ERA For The NL East and a 2012 ERA For The MLB 5. See link section below. In each publication, the...
Roy Halladay allowed just two hits in eight innings and the Philadelphia Phillies opened with a 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday.
The two-time Cy Young winner, making his 10th straight Opening Day start, settled down quickly after a shaky start for the defending NL East champions. Halladay didn't give up a hit after the first inning.
Carlos Ruiz had three hits...
Roy Halladay threw eight shut-out innings, while Jonathan Papelbon records his first Phil save, as the Phils squeak out an opening day win against the Pirates, 1-0.
The first six innings involved a pitcher’s duel between Phils’ starter Roy Halladay, who would give up two lead-off hits in the first, before inducing a doubleplay ball, before going through the Pirates’ line-up...
In the 10th straight opening day start of his career, Roy Halladay was nearly perfect. Through 8 innings against the Pirates, he allowed only 2 hits, both of which came in the 1st inning. After the 1st, he was unhittable.
And it is a very good thing, too. Because the Phillies offense got off to a bit of a slow start with a few exceptions. Carlos Ruiz went 3 for 3 and drove in the...
Roy Halladay outdueled Erik Bedard, pitching eight strong innings as the visiting Philadelphia Phillies opened the season with a 1-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Halladay (1-0) allowed back-to-back singles to Alex Presley and Jose Tabata leading off the first inning. The two-time Cy Young winner then got Andrew McCutchen to ground into a double play. A hit a batter in the...
Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies has waited his entire career to dominate batters with October mastery. Will Ryan Howard provide Doc, Cliff Lee and Hunter Pence with their first taste of the ultimate bubbly? Will the red pinstripes revisit the Fall Classic and find a familiar foe? Will this rival offer an extra incentive for a 2nd parade down Broad Street?

After making plenty of news off the field this spring, the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres will finally play ball.
Reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw is scheduled to start for the Dodgers while newcomer Edinson Volquez goes for the Padres on Thursday at Petco Park.
The Dodgers are being sold for $2.15 billion to a group involving Magic Johnson.
The Phils will begin their 129th season as a member of the National League with an afternoon game against the Pittsburgh Pirates tomorrow afternoon at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, PA. The game will start at 1:05 pm EDT.
The Phils, who are coming off a team record setting 102-80 win season, will be protecting their fifth straight National League Eastern Division Championship, also a...
The Pirates open the 2012 season with a three-games series at PNC Park against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Bucs will toss lefty Erik Bedard in the opener. The Phillies will counter with right-hander Roy Halladay.
Final: Phillies 1, Pirates 0
WP: Roy Halladay (1-0, 0.00 ERA)
LP: Erik Bedard (0-1, 1.29 ERA)
SV: Jonathan Papelbon (1, 0.00 ERA)
Alex Presley led off the bottom of the first with a line drive base hit. Jose Tabata then followed with an infield single. Things were looking good. But then Andrew McCutchen hit into a 6-4-3 double play and the Pirates would not collect another hit off...
