The Pirates were soundly defeated by the awful Mets on Monday night, and they sunk to three games under .500 as a result. Nine games remain this season, so every loss severely damages their chances of reaching 81 or 82 wins.

Kyle McPherson pitched well early on, but Ike Davis took him deep in the fourth with a man on for a two-run shot. Kyle ran into some more trouble in the fifth, then came out and saw Hisanori Takahashi allow two more runs on his behalf – plus two of his own on another bomb by Davis. 6-0.

The Pirates couldn’t hit Mets starter Jenrry Mejia, who appeared to lack command and only lasted five innings despite allowing just four hits. Mejia picked up his first major league win. Once the game was essentially over, the Bucs picked up two runs late when Andrew McCutchen drilled a triple and scored on a Garrett Jones single in the 8th. Jose Tabata drove in a run in the ninth as well.

This would be a very upsetting loss if we were still fully emotionally invested in this team. I don’t think any fan still is at this point.

Mets 6, Pirates 2 / Box / 2012 Record: 75-78 / Next: Tuesday, at Mets, 7:10

MVP: Harrison (+.051) / LVP: Karstens (-.158) / Key play: Davis’ first HR
