Livan Hernandez has not been around forever. It only seems that way.

The 37-year-old right-hander found yet another team to play for when the Milwaukee Brewers signed him to a deal for the remainder of the season. Hernandez was released a few days earlier by the Atlanta Braves.

Though Hernandez has been a starting pitcher for most of his career, the Brewers plan on using him in relief. That's how Atlanta was using him before he was released, and he was 1-1 with a 4.94 ERA in 18 appearances for the Braves this year.

"It came fast," Hernandez said of the deal with the Brewers. "It's something nice. I had other options, and I was at home a couple days ago and they called me and I took the deal. I know a lot of people here, and I have a lot of friends here."

As for how Hernandez might be used, he shrugged his shoulders and said, "I don't know. I have nothing for you now. I just got here, and I don't even know what's going on."

Manager Ron Roenicke suggested Hernandez would go in a long-relief role for the present. The Brewers have not had a true long reliever since right-hander Marco Estrada was moved into a starting role in April, replacing injured Chris Narveson, before Estrada went on the disabled list as well.

"I think it just gives us the long guy that we've been talking about," Roenicke said before the Brewers' 1-0, 10-inning win over the Chicago White Sox. "Manny (Parra), we say he's our long guy, but we haven't used him as our long guy; we use him more against left-handers.

"It kind of puts him in a role maybe like Estrada was last year, where he's that long guy. And if we need a spot start, we know he can do that."
