Ooh boy. Ben Cherington's "I want a Freddy Garcia or Bartolo Colon" strategy is becoming even more apparent, as MLBTradeRumors passes along a story in a Nicaraguan paper that says the Red Sox have met with former Phillie, Dodger, and Ranger Vicente Padilla.

Padilla had some success early in his career, and hasn't really tailed off quite as badly as I originally thought.

He's entering his age 35 season, so it's not like he has some kind of ceiling that he hasn't hit. He made 16 starts for the Dodgers two years ago and maintained a 1.08 WHIP and an ERA just over 4. Last year he made just nine appearances (all relief) for the Dodgers, and was fine.

Translate that to the AL, and with the exact same kind of stuff you could see him throwing a 4.50 ERA out there. If his arm can stay connected to his body, he could be a useful live arm. (And yes, that's the only qualification to pitch for the Red Sox at this point.)

The story says he's coming to Boston to be checked out by doctors, so this could be more advanced than tire-kicking. On a minor-league deal, it's a reasonable risk. Maybe he adds bullpen depth, or maybe he fights for that last rotation spot (which is apparently his goal). He'd get more attention nationally by playing for the Sox, which could inflate his price for future deals. But we're getting ahead of ourselves a bit.
