The Outside Corner:

St. Louis Cardinals
For some MLB teams, losing a closer to injury could be a significant development.
The Milwaukee Brewers booted John Axford from that role quickly, before his struggles could seriously damage their chances to contend. The Detroit Tigers didn't name a closer out of spring training, and have spent the first two weeks of the season looking for someone to seize the job.
Could the St. Louis Cardinals find their division title hopes jeopardized if Jason Motte ends up missing the entire season with an elbow injury?
The Cards' closer has been out for the past three weeks, resting what was initially diagnosed as a strained flexor tendon in his right elbow. But as the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Rick Hummel reports, Motte hasn't shown any improvement.
An MRI exam showed a low-grade tear in Motte's elbow ligament. The Cardinals are hoping that three weeks of rest are sufficient for the injury to heal.
However, if Motte's condition hasn't ...

St. Louis Cardinals right-handed reliever Jason Motte’s
initial injury was described as a mild strain to his throwing elbow. While this
doesn’t sound especially serious, the injury seems to be more significant than
initially thought following Motte’s second MRI, according to Derrick Goold of
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Motte underwent another MRI yesterday to attempt...
ST. LOUIS (AP) St. Louis Cardinals closer Jason Motte faces reconstructive elbow surgery if his condition does not improve in the next three weeks or so.
It would be another huge blow to a team that has already lost pitcher Chris Carpenter and shortstop Rafael Furcal for the season. The Cardinals pretty much stood pat after losing to the San Francisco Giants in the NL championship...
ST. LOUIS (AP) Jake Westbrook pitched a five-hit shutout and the St. Louis Cardinals backed him with four home runs Wednesday in routing the Cincinnati Reds 10-0.
Jon Jay, Carlos Beltran and Matt Adams homered in a span of seven at-bats off Homer Bailey as the Cardinals took two of three from the NL Central champions.
Matt Carpenter added a two-run homer on a four-hit day. Adams...

Ok. Enough Cardinals talk. Because in comparison to what's going on with the Cubs, well... let's just go to the news:
ITEM 1: Cubs prospect attacks visiting dugout with a bat!
Oh, the Cubs. At least it's not like this guy is signed for 9 years or 30 million dollars and is a top prospect, right?
Considering how many...
ST. LOUIS Matt Adams watched from the top step as Bronson Arroyo wound up, kicked high and threw one perplexing pitch after another.
For five innings, the Cincinnati Reds starter had been untouchable. No, perfect. Fifteen Cardinals walked to the plate. Fifteen returned empty-handed.
"I just watched from the dugout the whole game," the Cardinals pinch-hitter would say...
Of all positions in the Cardinals system, first base is perhaps the one that developed the most unexpectedly. While there was no need for a real succession plan due the long-term presence of Albert Pujols, and then Lance Berkman on the roster as well, it was a spot that could have left the team sorely in need of help. However, Allen Craig stepped up in both the wake of the departure...
The MLB does not generally allow commemorative baseballs, but have made an exception for Stan Musial and the St. Louis Cardinals.
St. Louis Cardinals starter Lance Lynn is much skinnier this year, but he still carries with him a heavy, mid-nineties fastball. Lynn dished out a heavy dosage of those fastballs on Tuesday night, striking out 10 Reds' hitters in six innings to pick up the victory in the Cardinals 5-1 win over Cincinnati.
Lynn was excellent on Tuesday night. He pounded the strike zone with...
ST. LOUIS (AP) Lance Lynn struck out 10 in six sharp innings and rookie Matt Adams connected for his first career pinch-hit homer as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-1 on Tuesday night.
Reds starter Bronson Arroyo (1-1) retired the first 15 batters. The Cardinals broke through in the sixth, with Adams hitting a two-run homer and Allen Craig and Carlos Beltran also...

I can’t express enough how much I like Matt Carpenter (4-for-5, 2 R, 2 RBI, HR) for the 2013 season. You have the fact that he has always been a high-average hitter who could also get on base via the walk. He has just enough power (15 HR) and a great lineup where he should be able to be able to reach 80 R and 80 RBI by year’s end. Then there’s the position eligibility. Oh,...
