Since you follow the St Louis Cardinals, you know they are hosting the San Diego Padres this week.  If you read this site with any regularity you know I blog about the San Diego Padres in my spare time.  So naturally this post will be about last night’s 4-3 win over those Padres, right? Nope.  Today’s post is about Albert Pujols.  Why?  Because I had the opportunity to watch him hit in person last Sunday. Petco Park has a well deserved reputation as a pitcher’s park.  Even Pujols has trouble driving the ball there.  Petco is one of only 4 NL ballparks in which Pujols has a career OPS of less than .900, and of the other three only AT&T Park is still in use.  Even so, Pujols has 7 career home runs against the Padres and has homered at least once in every series since 2008.  Yeah, he’s struggled mightily this season, but I knew – KNEW – he was hitting one out this weekend. He came close on Saturday night, but didn’t homer against these Padres.  Pujols went 2-for-12 in the series, wit

The Padres can be such a surprise sometimes. In a game that came down to 13 innings you had to begin to wonder if the Padres would be able to ever score another run. After being blown out on Friday and winning on Saturday, Sunday's rubber match had to come down to 4 extra innings in order to find a series winner. And wouldn't you know it, the Padres prevailed! This is quite...

Gwynn joins bid to buy Padres

Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn has joined movie producer Thomas Tull’s attempt to buy the San Diego Padres.

Padres fan catches foul ball while holding beer (Video)

A San Diego Padres fan made a great barehanded grab of a foul ball during Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Angels. The fan bobbled it twice before catching it with his right hand while holding a can of beer in his left hand. Your browser does not support iframes. It happened in the top of the eighth inning when Los Angeles Angels batter Howard Kendrick hit a foul...

2012 Fantasy Baseball, Week 8 Sit Em/Start Em: Add Clayton Richard For Two Starts

Clayton Richard Hitters to StartWill Venable | San Diego Padres | (1.0%) – Venable could make a cheap pickup for speed and run production, and possibly power in deeper leagues this week.  He starts off his week against the Cardinals.  Against Cardinals pitching Venable is hitting .500 in 32 career at-bats.  In 31 at-bats at Busch Stadium Venable is hitting .484 with a 1.127...

Agent: Gwynn joins Tull in Padres bid

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Tony Gwynn's agent says the Hall of Famer is joining movie producer Thomas Tull in an attempt to buy the San Diego Padres. Agent John Boggs says Gwynn's role with Tull's group hasn't been defined. Tull, the chairman of Legendary Entertainment, is among several people interested in buying the Padres. Majority owner John Moores announced last month...

Pitcher Profile: Kick His Bass, Sea Ass!

You spilled the salt! I feel like that’s what you should yell after your Hodgepadre gives up more than three earned runs at home.  Raise the fences PETCO!  When your Hodgepadre spills the salt, you have to throw the shaker over your shoulder. But what if your Hodgepadre is un-throwable?  Mat Latos sure toed the line last year, but ended strong.  Cory Luebke stayed on the table...

Daily Friar 5.23.12

Due to family being in town recently, I haven't been able to watch many Padres games. Lately I've been able to sneak away for a few minutes and catch the tail end of games, but last night I was unable to watch any of it. However, after reading the recap it appears that I didn't miss out on too much. Going against Adam Wainright is no easy task to begin with, but to face...

Baseball’s Two Biggest Surprises

Every team in Major League Baseball has now played over 40 games. That’s more than a quarter of the season, which means we can no longer say Albert Pujols is having a slow start or the Orioles are just getting lucky. Let’s take a look at the two most surprising team performances so far, one bad, one good. Along the way, we’ll have a little fun at the expense of ESPN’s absolutely expert...

Gwynn joins group in Padres bid

Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn is joining with movie producer Thomas Tull in an attempt to buy the San Diego Padres. Gwynn said Monday that it's too early to say what his role will be, beyond offering advice and insight, while stressing that he's still the coach at his alma mater, San Diego State. Gwynn met with Tull in San Diego last week and said he's spoken with him several...

Angels-Athletics Preview

A lack of timely hitting hurt the Los Angeles Angels during the first stop on their road trip. They've also had trouble coming through in the clutch in recent games against the Oakland Athletics. Albert Pujols, though, has been successful in this season's series and he'll try to help the potentially short-handed Angels avoid their longest losing streak in nearly a month...

Angels' Pujols homers, Wilson beats A's

C.J. Wilson and Ernesto Frieri combined on a one-hitter and the Los Angeles Angels broke out of their offensive slump in a 5-0 win over the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night. Albert Pujols homered for the third time in seven days while Mark Trumbo and Howie Kendrick both had RBI singles for the Angels, who had scored only five runs in their previous three games combined. A day...

Creeper of the Week: Will Venable

Location, location, location. Location determines balls and strikes, the weather, housing value, and it can even turn Carlos Gonzalez (.262/.316/.427 on the road) into Ken Griffey Jr. (.329/.384/.609 at home). Personally, I dig California. You’re never far from a beach, a mountain range, or a desert. Pretty much every culture on earth is represented somewhere. The heat in the scorching...

Game Recap 5/21/12 -- And That's the Ballgame - Athletics 2 Angels 1

And there we go folks, this is pretty much the Angels season from here on out. Call me pessimistic but I really don't think the Angels are showing any signs of turning it around in the near OR far future. I mean, holy hell this team couldn't work more than 5 hits out of Milone? Really??Jerome Williams loaded the bases TWICE against the A's and only gave up TWO runs, and...
