Clayton Richard pitched seven strong innings and rookie Yasmani Grandal singled home the go-ahead run to lift the San Diego Padres over the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 on Wednesday, handing the slumping World Series champions their 11th loss in 15 games. The Cardinals began the day with a one-game lead over Los Angeles for the second NL wild-card berth. The Dodgers, who played later at Arizona, host St. Louis in a crucial four-game series starting Thursday night. St. Louis put a runner on third with one out in the ninth but was unable to score. World Series MVP David Freese and pinch-hitter Skip Schumaker both grounded out. Logan Forsythe hit a solo home run for the Padres, who completed a three-game sweep of St. Louis for the first time since August 1995. San Diego has an NL-best 17-5 record since Aug. 19 and has taken 21 of its last 27 games at home. Richard (13-12) outpitched Kyle Lohse and gave up only three hits, including a two-run homer by Matt Carpenter that tied the game at 2 in the sixth. The left-hander struck out five, walked one and hit a batter with a pitch. Luke Gregerson pitched the ninth for his seventh save, working around a leadoff double by Allen Craig. After pinch-runner Adron Chambers was sacrificed to third, Gregerson got Freese on a grounder to third before walking pinch-hitter Carlos Beltran. Gregerson then retired Schumaker on an easy grounder to first base to end the game. Lohse (14-3) had his eight-game winning streak snapped as he allowed three runs - two earned - on five hits over six innings. He struck out eight. Lohse's streak spanned 13 starts back to June 26. Forsythe connected with two outs in the second to give San Diego a 1-0 lead. In his last 13 games, Forsythe has 11 RBIs and 11 runs while raising his batting average 29 points to .289. Carpenter's error in right field cost the Cardinals a run in the fifth. Yonder Alonso singled and went to third on Cameron Maybin's one-out double into the right-field corner. But when Carpenter overran the ball, Alonso was able to score. Carpenter homered immediately after Jon Jay's leadoff single in the sixth, but San Diego went ahead in the bottom half on Chase Headley's two-out double and Grandal's run-scoring single. Chase Headley: Exceeder of Dreams

I don’t intend to mean-spiritedly pick on the fine folks over at Baseball Prospectus, but in this instance I can’t not make a little fun. A couple excerpts from paragraphs found on Chase Headley‘s player page: I don’t think Headley is going to have more than .150 Isolated Power. Partially due to Petco, partially because he’s not that kind of hitter. (5/5/2010) That was...

Headley's hot streak no mirage for Padres

(Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated. With AP Photos.) By BERNIE WILSON AP Sports Writer At first, Chase Headley's power surge seemed like a mirage. He was going to cool off, right? As summer dragged on, Headley only got hotter. The San Diego Padres' third baseman has 27 homers and an NL-leading 102 RBIs, extending his career bests in both categories and breathing some life...

Cardinals searching for answers to poor play

SAN DIEGO Standing in front of his locker following a second straight sloppy loss that dropped the Cardinals to 4-10 in their past 14 games, starter Adam Wainwright did his best to convince those worried about his teammates that they shouldn't be. Despite losing five of their last six games and posting just four wins since August 28, the Cardinals remain one game in front of...

Garcia not guaranteed to start Saturday

SAN DIEGO The Cardinals will decide in the next day or so whether or not to let Jaime Garcia make his next scheduled start Saturday in Los Angeles. Garcia allowed four runs, seven hits and three walks Monday night, continuing an ugly trend of poor performances away from the friendly confines of Busch Stadium. The left-hander has a 2.63 ERA at home this season compared to a 6.19...

Cardinals first baseman Lance Berkman was scheduled to undergo season-ending knee surgery on Tuesday, and it could lead to his retirement, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Tuesday. Berkman had a second MRI in less than two weeks on Monday, at which time it was determined surgery was needed. He needs additional meniscus shaved from a knee that has already undergone three...

Well That Was Fun

That just happened, huh? In the midst of final three weeks of the season, the Cardinals started the penultimate road trip of 2012 by getting swept. Against a team 9 games under .500. At least they were, until the Cardinals came to down.Yup. The Fathers whipped off their work belt and went to town on the bare asses of the feckless basballers we call Cardinals. Massively ineffective...

Daily Friar 9.11.12

You know the offense is having a good night when two guys on the team are one hit away from the cycle. Funny thing is each was holding the hit that the other needed. Cameron Maybin had the home run, double and single; Logan Forsythe had the triple, double, single. On top of all their offense, Chris Denorfia added 4 hits to the mix of his own. All this came against a team who is making...

Game Picks - Wednesday: September 12, 2012

Those stupid Cardinals. Despite great picks like the Astros and Ian Kennedy over Clayton Kershaw, the picks foundered around the .500 mark all day. The Red Sox won as predicted, but the Bay Rays did not. That's how the day went. The stupid St. Louis Cardinals was the swing game between over .500 and below it. They had Adam Wainwright on the mound, their ace. They had the early...
