Clayton Richard pitched effectively into the seventh inning, Carlos Quentin homered and the surging San Diego Padres beat the Colorado Rockies 5-4 on Friday night. Cameron Maybin had three hits for the Padres, who have won two straight and 10 of 11. Jordan Pacheco, Wilin Rosario and Andrew Brown homered for Colorado, which has dropped two straight. Richard (12-12) had his sixth consecutive strong outing to even his record following a slow start to the season. He was 6-10 after losing to the Dodgers on July 13, but came on strong in August, winning his last three starts and finishing the month 5-1. Luke Gregerson allowed Brown's leadoff homer in ninth before finishing up for his third save. The home run ended Gregerson's scoreless streak at 23 innings. Rockies starter Alex White (2-7) failed to pitch past the fourth inning for his fifth straight start. He allowed three runs and four hits and walked three in 3 2-3 innings. Quentin put the Padres ahead 1-0 when he led off the second with his 15th home run of the season. They added another run when Yasmani Grandal scored on Logan Forsythe's single. Will Venable tripled with one out in the third and scored on Chase Headley's groundout to make it 3-0. The Rockies got one back in the bottom half of inning when Josh Rutledge scored on Pacheco's grounder. Headley and Quentin hit consecutive doubles in the fifth to extend San Diego's lead to 4-1. Solo homers in the sixth by Pacheco and Rosario pulled Colorado to 4-3. Maybin scored from second on an infield single by Chris Denorfia in the eighth to extend the lead to 5-3. NOTES: The Rockies are expected to activate 1B Jason Giambi (viral infection) from the 15-day DL and recall RHP Guillermo Moscoso from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Saturday. ... Chacin dazzles for Colorado Rockies in first start at Coors Field since return

The Rockies need Chacin to be the 2010 version.Jhoulys Chacin has arguably been the worst part of a terrible 2012 season for the Colorado Rockies. Before the season began, general manager Dan O'Dowd was on record saying that the righty, expected to be the ace of the pitching staff, was out of shape and that he was disappointed by reports that he didn't work hard in the offseason...

Daily Farm Round-Up: 8-31-12

Andrew Cashner makes his 3rd rehab start as the T-Pads lose to the Aces 7-2. Nathan Freiman continues to hit the ball extremely well as he leads the Missions to a 4-2 victory over the RockHounds. Travis Jankowski extends his hitting streak to 14 games as the TinCaps dominate the Whitecaps and win 7-0. Despite a home run from Jeremy Baltz, Eugene loses to the Indians 3-1. Hitting...

Daily Farm Round-Up: 8-30-12

Jedd Gyorko goes hitless, but the T-Pads still pull out the victory and beat the Bees 3-1. Adys Portillo had a great start as the Missions barely beat the RockHounds 3-2. Justin Miller and Casey McElroy both contribute offensively, but can’t stop the Storm from getting rocked 10-3. It was a hot night offensively for the TinCaps as Jankowski increased his hit streak to 13 and Travis...

Rockies activate Giambi from DL

The Colorado Rockies activated first baseman Jason Giambi from the 15-day disabled list on Saturday following his recovery from a viral infection. In another move as clubs were allowed to expand their rosters, the Rockies recalled right-handed pitcher Guillermo Moscoso from their Triple-A affiliate in Colorado Springs. Giambi had missed 35 games since being placed on the DL retroactive...

Rockies to repeat 4 man rotation in 2013

Denver, CO. Word has come down from the Colorado Rockies that they will continue to utilize the four man piggyback pitching rotation in 2013. Fans in Denver may moan when they hear this, but based on the current success with the rotation the idea has some legs. Many may find it actually a bad thing that the Rockies are having success as the season draws to a close, but as fans we...

Padres-Rockies Preview

It's almost certainly too late for the San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies to make the postseason, but neither team is playing like they believe that. The Padres and Rockies, the bottom two teams in the NL West, open a three-game series at Coors Field on Friday night in a matchup of surging clubs. San Diego (61-71) won for the ninth time in 10 games Wednesday, 8-2 over wild...

A Post About the San Diego Padres

Overlord Dave and I exchange a lot of emails, and earlier Thursday he sent me an email declaring that everybody’s talking about the Padres. I chuckled heartily to myself, as Dave is one of the funniest people I know. The Padres are about as forgettable a franchise as any in the major professional sports. They could win seven consecutive World Series and still people would only...

Rockies 9, Padres 1

Jhoulys Chacin pitched seven strong innings, Dexter Fowler hit his first career grand slam, and the Colorado Rockies beat the San Diego Padres 9-1 on Saturday night. Tyler Colvin also homered and doubled to drive in three runs to help the Rockies cool off the Padres, who had won 10 of their previous 11. Chacin (2-4) allowed one run on five hits for his second win since coming back...

Daily Friar 8.30.12

I forgot that yesterday's game was an afternoon game until I went to turn the TV on at 7 and found out that there was no game to be seen. So I completely missed the fact that our Padres whooped the Braves to win yet another series. This is the 3rd series in a row they have won, and are now 9-1 in their past 10 games. Let's look at some numbers shall we? In the month of August...

Padres Improving But Many Fans Can’t Watch On TV

Yesterday Jeff Sullivan wrote about the San Diego Padres. If you haven’t read Jeff’s post, go read it now. I’ll wait. Okay, so now you know that since June 10, the Padres have a record of 41-30 and have outscored their opponents by 32 runs. But that’s not all. The Padres are 9-1 in their last 10 games, 13-7 in their last 20, and 18-12 in their last 30. They are outplaying...

Four-Man Rotation: A Rockies Revolution

In June, the Colorado Rockies decided to take an unconventional approach to improving their 25-40 record: A modified four-man rotation that outlined new expectations for starters and bullpen arms alike. With nothing to lose except more games, the experiment, which was thought to be a short-term solution to mitigate poor performance and injuries, has general manager Dan O’Dowd...

Rafael Betancourt is Just Getting Laughable

There have been two players named Betancourt throughout the course of major-league history, and it just so happens that both of them are current. Far more has been written about Yuniesky Betancourt than Rafael Betancourt, even though Rafael has been around longer, and even though Yuniesky is terrible. But then, that’s kind of the reason. Yuniesky wasn’t supposed to be terrible...

Madfriars' Daily Farm Report: August 31

The TinCaps locked up a playoff spot and still have a chance to claim the second-half division title, but both Eugene and Lake Elsinore were eliminated from the playoffs Friday night. The Padres got good news from Andrew Cashner's final rehab start in Tucson and San Antonio showed some spirit as they play out the season.
