The San Diego Padres are on the verge of extending Carlos Quentin to a three-year $27mm extension, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. The deal will also include $3mm in very reachable bonuses that would push the total value to $30mm. The deal also includes a full no-trade clause Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports notes. The Padres viewed Michael Cuddyer, Edwin Encarnacion and Josh Willingham recent deals as fair comps for Quentin's. The Padres acquired Quentin back in December from the White Sox for prospects Simon Hernandez and Pedro Hernandez. The Padres management team sought approval from the current owners as well as the new ownership group to make sure everyone was on the same page. Quentin had been subject to numerous trade rumors as the season went on. Recently we heard that the Padres would try to sign Quentin to an extension and if they couldn't they would then trade him. Heyman also notes that the team will now turn their attention to try and lock up all star closer, Huston Street to a multi-year extension. In 167 plate appearances, Quentin is hitting .273 with 38 hits, 9 home runs and is slugging .525 but started the season on the DL because of knee surgery. Quentin who had a career year in 2008 when he hit .286 with 36 home runs and 100 RBIs, has seen his production slip where he hit .254 with 24 home runs and 77 RBIs last season. With Quentin soon to be off the market, Heyman notes that interest in Corey Hart and Hunter Pence, if they are available should see increased interest.
