Bill Center of the San Diego Union-Tribune held a chat today (h/t MLBTR), and a question was brought up about the San Diego Padres’ return for Ryan Ludwick. The Pittsburgh Pirates received Ludwick for a player to be named later back in July, although the player has yet to be named. Center reports that he is hearing the Padres could opt for cash considerations in the deal.
Center also mentions that the Padres might be looking at Paul Maholm.

Where Are the Hitting Prospects?
Josh Bell has the potential to be an elite hitting prospect, but what else do the Pirates have in their system?
A question that gets asked a lot about the Pittsburgh Pirates’ farm system is: where’s the offense? The question isn’t asked in that manner every time. Sometimes it’s an indirect question, asking if the Pirates are going to focus on offense in future...
Am I crazy about a potential Cameron Maybin extension?
Yesterday I wrote about the prospect of the San Diego Padres extending center fielder Cameron Maybin to a long-term deal.
I estimated that a six-year, $40 million deal (plus an option) would be fair to both Maybin and the Padres, giving the center fielder financial security for life and the Padres a chance to maximize surplus value. The proposed six-year deal would buyout Maybin’s...
This Date in Pirates History: December 29
Born on this date in 1977 was Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson, who played for the team from 2001 until 2009. Wilson was originally draft by the Cardinals in 1998. The Pirates acquired him on July 29, 2000 in exchange for pitcher Jason Christiansen. Jack started the 2001 season in the majors as the team’s starting shortstop, skipping over AAA. After hitting .155 through...
Early look at 2012: Bullpen
Yes, it’s still EXTREMELY early and tons of things could (and should) change between now and April 5th, but since we are now under 100 days until the season and there isn’t much else going on at the moment, here’s a look at the Bucs as they currently stand. I started with the rotation. Next up: the bullpen.
Here’s how the ‘pen would probably look if the season started...
San Diego Padres Preparing to Trade Top Prospect Anthony Rizzo Already?
The San Diego Padres have been known to pull off some major trades involving top prospects. Being a small market team with an extremely low payroll, the Padres are generally the team who deals away a big time player with MLB experience for a package of top prospects from another team. But this time, they may be the one who deals away a top prospect, although it is unknown as to what...
Wave through the window
Editor’s note: Welcome Scott Tanderup to Friar Forecast. He’ll be a regular contributor. He writes at Padres Future and he’ll be focusing on prospects and the general direction of the organization.
Fellow San Diego Padres fanatics and baseball junkies (you have to be a baseball junkie if you are reading another teams blog), the Padres are about to enter what could...
Cameron Maybin Player Projection No. 104
Key Stats: Nobody had more stolen bases after the all-star break than Cameron Maybin. Maybin’s 28 steals in the second half were 2 more than the overall stolen base leader Michael Bourn. Maybin only had one steal in 23 games in May, but clearly earned had confidence in himself and the trust of his coaches as the season progressed. It seems like he’s been around forever (he did...
Daily Friar 12.30.11
The Padres continue to remain quiet as we head into the new year. However, if Bill Center is correct in his assumptions, then we could see a trade fairly soon. It feels like Byrnes has his finger hovering over the launch button and we are all just waiting for it to go off. Steve Adler said it best in a tweet a couple weeks ago: Waiting for the next trade is like waiting for a...
2011: A weird year to be a Pirate fan
This is probably a sad indictment of my existence as a Pirate fan, but when every year starts my general hopes for the Pirates can be boiled down thusly: I hope that they're not too embarrassingly terrible and I hope that whatever happens over the course of the next 365 days gets them closer to a future in which I can have Pirate-related-hopes that aren't so depressing. Usually...
Padres Notes: Rizzo, Maholm, Young, Quentin
Bill Center of the San Diego Union-Tribune held his weekly chat with fans today and shared some news about some possible moves the Padres could have cooking this offseason...
Center thinks Anthony Rizzo will be traded "in the next week or two." He predicts Rizzo will be sent to the Rays, who will then flip Rizzo to the Cubs, where he is "still coveted"...
Active offseason prepares Padres for new year
The Padres are hopeful that changes on the field and in the front office will lead to a rebound season in 2012 as well as a bright future moving forward.
