Much was made of Melky Cabrera's 51 hits in May, which matched Randy Winn's San Francisco record for hits in a month. But little has been made of Angel Pagan's record. Pagan's is a franchise record, not just a San Francisco record. The center fielder hit in 25 straight home games, and that's a record dating to the history of the franchise, including the New York years -- though records go back to just 1918, and the Giants' origins were in the 1800s. The Giants beat the Cubs 4-3, and Pagan's bloop single in the third inning extended his home hit streak to 25 games, surpassing Don Mueller's record of 24 in a row set from Sept. 13, 1954, to May 5, 1955. Pagan, acquired from the Mets in the trade that sent Andres Torres and Ramon Ramirez to the Mets, has been part of a brand-new, productive outfield, also including left fielder Melky Cabrera and right fielder Gregor Blanco. "I've never been looking for that," Pagan said of the re...

Umpiring, Matt Cain and the case of Pablo Sandoval

There have been several topics concerning the Giants I’ve been waiting to discuss on this site, and today seems like a perfect day to do so. Umpiring, instant replay and a need for change The first topic is a hot one around the league – umpiring and the use of instant replay in Major League Baseball. Let me start off by saying I used to be a big supporter of pure umpiring and...

Cabrera's 51 May hits match San Francisco record

(Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated. With AP Photos.) By JANIE McCAULEY AP Baseball Writer Melky Cabrera is a new marketing phenomenon: ''Got Melk?'' He is piling up nicknames nearly as quickly as he is piling up hits. Melk Man. Melky Way. And the old standby from his Yankees days, Leche - milk in Spanish. Cabrera has quite the following at AT&T Park, where several...

Postgame Wrap: Therrific

Ignoring for just a moment the last half inning of last night’s game, the whole thing was pretty spectacular. Madison Bumgarner cruised like he was facing the Rangers on Halloween, but with better control. Melky Cabrera had two hits, Posey had a key hit after falling behind 0-2, and even Brett Pill stole a base. But man, Ryan Theriot. Three hits and a walk, and his hits came in...

Melky’s Impressive May

With the Giants’ scheduled off-day today, Melky Cabrera‘s impressive May draws to an end. Through 29 games this month, Melky came to the plate 129 times; 51 of those plate appearances ended with a hit. With those 51 hits, Melky led the majors and in fact had 11 more hits than any other player — although a few players have a chance to shorten that gap today. Additionally, he...

Giants 4, Cubs 3

Melky Cabrera remained the hottest hitter in the National League, Madison Bumgarner picked up his first win in nearly four weeks and the San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3 on Friday night. First addition of “How ‘Bout that 2011 Met?”

Angel Pagan, who the Mets traded for Andres Torres and Ramon Ramirez during the off-season, has a 27 game home hitting streak, hitting in the last 27 games played at AT&T Park. Thus far into the season, it seems that the Giants got the better part of their trade with the Mets.

Cubs-Giants Preview
