According to multiple sources, the Phillies have acquired utility infielder/outfielder Ty Wigginton and cash from the Colorado Rockies for a player to be named later and/or an undisclosed amount of cash.

All of the deal’s full details have not been announced just yet, but reports are saying that Wigginton will make around $4 million in 2012. While the Phillies are sending a player to be named later to Colorado, they will be getting cash in return, cash that could be used to aid in future deals.

Wigginton, who has nine major league seasons under his belt, will be joining his seventh team as he jumps aboard with Philadelphia. In nine seasons, Wigginton has a career .256 batting average, 158 home runs, and 548 runs batted in. This past season, Wigginton batted .242 and hit 15 home runs in 130 games with Colorado.

Phillies’ GM Ruben Amaro Jr. released a statement regarding Wigginton and his pursuit of the 34-year-old.

“We've actually talked about Ty for years. We've talked about him as a third baseman in the past. We've talked about him as a utility guy in the past. We had some discussions with the agents in the past.”, Amaro Jr. said. “We just feel like this gives us a different look on the bench and on our club. Who knows how much he'll play, but at least he's a guy who can fill in for an extended period of time."

With Wigginton becoming the newest Phillie, questions may arise regarding Michael Cuddyer. Cuddyer was rumored to be in talks with the Phillies in early November, but such rumors have since disintegrated.

Nonetheless, the Phillies have a seasoned player in Wigginton who can play the corner outfields and the infield, as well as being used off of the bench.
