Summary I think I enjoy making up names for the recaps. I have to think hard. Neither bad weather nor our rival team could shake Jeremy Hefner tonight and I actually look forward to seeing more of this guy in the future. Jeremy Hefner started tonight since the starters are injured and the replacements are injured or not performing – but he did fine out there tonight.  He probably will not be on anyone’s write-in list for the all-star game, but hey, credit should be given where credit is due. He pitched 6 innings tonight, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits – which happens to be the minimum for a quality start (whatever value you give to that stat, so be it.) Jimmy Rollins scored the first run on a wild pitch from a Hunter Pence strikeout. Remember Brian Schneider? He took Hefner deep for his second HR of the year. A misplayed Pence double led to the third run of the game for the Phillies, but overall, bend but not break for Hefner on the evening. 4 Ks and 0 walks round out his stats. Parnell ...

R.A. Dickey Named National League Player of the Week

New York Mets right-hander R.A. Dickey has been named the National League Player of the Week for the period ending May 27th. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network. Dickey was a perfect 2-0 in two starts last week and had a Major League-best 21 strikeouts. The knuckleballer allowed just a single earned run in his two outings, compiling a 0.63 ERA for the week, which...

McHugh Has Scouts Buzzing, Mulvey Calls It Quits, Good News For Verrett

Collin McHugh continues his incredible season with another solid start on Monday as he allowed just two runs on five hits and a walk while racking up a season-high eight strikeouts. McHugh’s 2.17 ERA ranks fifth in the Eastern League as does his 1.08 WHIP. But what really impresses me is his 53 strikeouts which is the second most in the league. Always known for his tremendous...

Mets COO says no rush to sign Wright to new deal

Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon says there is no rush to sign star third baseman David Wright to a new contract. Wright's salary is $15.25 million this season and the team holds a $16 million option for 2013, which gets voided if he is traded. After that, he can become a free agent. Wilpon was asked about Wright after a news conference Wednesday to announce a $20,000...

Cole Hamels struck out 6 in 8 innings for his 8th win of the year in the Phillies 8-4 win over the Mets.Ty Wigginton hit a home run and knocked in 6 runs. He walked twice and scored twice. John Mayberry Jr. also homered.

Philadelphia Phillies storyline: Wrinkles on the diamond

Carlos Ruiz of the Philadelphia Phillies healed for a few days before being penciled into the cleanup spot tonight. Nobody expected his March madness to continue, but he has been stopped occasionally by a banged-up body. How long will he thrive? Who else is still riding high? TAL'S HANDY CAPS CAP-SIZE HINDSIGHT Penthouse Occupancy for the 6-3 outcome:  1 The Chrystal Champagne...

Roy Halladay placed on DL, out 6-8 weeks with strained lat

The Philadelphia Phllies have placed starting pitcher Roy Halladay on the 15-day DL with a strained right lat muscle, and he will be out for six to eight weeks. That would put him out of commission for the Phillies until mid to late July, which is absolutely not what this team needed at this point in time. Halladay left Saturday's start against the Cardinals in the first inning...

Shane Victorino is the gift that keeps on giving. Note: Still making ones from other angles, hold on. :o

Injuries piling up for top teams

As if there was any doubt that this is the Year of the Injury, consider the disturbing events of Tuesday, when two of the game's best pitchers went on the disabled list and a former MVP also faced that possibility. Phillies right-hander Roy Halladay and Angels right-hander Jered Weaver are major losses for their respective clubs, and the absence of second baseman Dustin Pedroia...

Ty Wigginton, Phillies Cool Off Mets on Hot Memorial Day With Win

Wearing one of the better-looking Stars and Stripes collection hats in a long time, the Phillies headed up to Shea Stadium in New York and got back into the winning spirit.  Phillies fans must be aware that a Shake Shack is opening in Philadelphia and so therefore had no need to go to Citi Field for today's hot Memorial Day game. The fun began as the Phillies scored two...

All Hail…Minaya?

The question I am about to ask if one that pains me to even strike the keys on the keyboard to type out, but as the Mets continue to pile up wins it is beginning to become a question that needs to be asked—is this unprecedented success the result of the new front office regime led by Sandy Alderson or a tribute to Omar Minaya actually being worth a damn as a G.M.? Look at the facts...

Handicapping the race for Roy Oswalt

Roy Oswalt's name is coming up more and more among clubs who are short on pitching depth. A number of teams have been linked to Oswalt, from the favorites (Rangers, Phillies, Red Sox) to the more surprising candidates (Dodgers, Orioles, Brewers). Oswalt has thrown for the three favorites as well as the Dodgers in recent weeks, and we seem to be getting close to a decision. Of...
