Philadelphia Phillies Placido Polanco won his 3rd career Gold Glove Award and became the first player in history to win a Gold Glove at two different infield positions.

Philadelphia Phillies 3rd baseman Placido Polanco won his third gold glove last night. Polanco started 118 games for the Phillies at 3rd base and had a .977 fielding percentage, tops among NL third baseman.

In winning the award, Polanco became the first ever player to win a gold glove award at two different infield positions. Placido Polanco won the award in 2007 and 2009 as a second baseman for the Detroit Tigers in the AL.

While Polanco was outstanding at the hot corner, his offensive production was severely limited because of a couple of injuries this season. Polanco had a record setting April for the Phillies, setting a club record with 41 hits in the first month of the season. Polanco batted .399 in that month.

Unfortunately for Polanco and the Phillies, it was all downhill for Polanco from there. A back injury that required injections and a sports hernia which also required pain killing injections hampered Polanco down the stretch. He finished the season with a .277 average, well below his .301 career mark.

Despite winning the last 3 Gold Gloves in centerfield, Shane Victorino was out shined by the Dodgers’ Matt Kemp. Catcher Carlos Ruiz was also in the running for the award, but was edged by Yadier Molina of the Cardinals.
