The Phillies fell to the Miami Marlins, 5-2, and in the process were swept by a team they continue to chase in the bottom of the NL East. Their losing streak is now at five. The team that won 102 games last year is now 36-45, their worst record halfway through a season since 1997. During that season, the Phillies lost 94 games. BLANTON GIVES ‘EM A CHANCE -Joe Blanton gave up three runs over six innings and gave his offense a chance to win it. But as they’ve done for most of this season, they fell short. Blanton fanned seven, but made one big mistake on a home run by Giancarlo Stanton that put the Marlins ahead for good. -The bullpen continues to struggle. Antonio Bastardo allowed an 8th inning homer to Hanley Ramirez that sealed the deal for the Marlins. Michael Schwimer was able to put up a zero in his one inning, but Bastardo, who has been all over the place this year, couldn’t keep it close. ABSENT OFFENSE -Although Carlos Ruiz was named an NL All Star today, he, and the rest of ...

Is something actually wrong with Cliff Lee?

With the Phillies currently in last place in the NL East, their fans are getting a tad bit nervous as we enter July. The major target of their frustrations is $20 million man Cliff Lee, who is still without a win this season in his 13 starts. Because of his lack of wins, and an ERA that is currently above 4.00, some fans are jumping all over the thought that something must be wrong...

Three Phillies Honored as MLB All-Stars

MLB announced its 2012 Major League All-Star rosters on Sunday. Starting pitcher Cole Hamels, catcher Carlos Ruiz and closer Jonathan Papelbon will all represent the Phillies in the annual exhibition. The left-handed Hamels has a 10-4 record with a 3.08 ERA through 16 starts this season. This is Hamels’ third All-Star selection. The 28-year-old has averaged 9 strike outs per...

Ruben Amaro Waves a Phillies White Flag With Jim Thome Trade

Well, that's it.  Ruben Amaro has given up on the Phillies for the 2012 season.   In case you did not pick that up by a lack of moves when things went wrong, his trade of Jim Thome to the Baltimore Orioles for nothing that would help this 2012 club shows that it is over. The Phillies record this year is an indication of what Amaro did or did not do for the club.  Now let...

Phillies need something positive -- Halladay's return would help

Charlie Manuel let out an odd chuckle in the visiting manager's office at Marlins Park on Saturday afternoon. It was either gallows humor or a self-deprecating laugh. But it also kind of summed up the state of his fading, underachieving team. "When we can't win with (Cliff) Lee and (Cole) Hamels, that kinds of tells you how things are going," Manuel said before...

Blanton, Nolasco Face Off In Series Finale

The Phillies have already lost this three-game set in Miami and today they will try to salvage a win to prevent a sweep. At 36-44, the Phillies sit 10 games out of first place and are eight games under the .500 mark. Joe Blanton will play the role of the sweep stopper today against the Marlins. Opposing will be Ricky Nolasco, who is pushing for a sweep. Blanton (7-6, 4.87 ERA) is...

Cliff Lee Win Watch

You've asked for it. You've got it - The 'Cliff Lee Win Watch' is here.I thought for a long time about what would be an appropriate sidebar widget to track and commemorate the historically 'unlucky'* season that the winless Cliff Lee is having. [*Don't even begin to argue that he's not unlucky. I don't want to here about the hits and runs and whatever...

Yankees acquire reliever Qualls from Phillies

The New York Yankees acquired right-handed relief pitcher Chad Qualls from the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Qualls, 33, was 1-1 with a 4.60 ERA in 35 relief appearances with the Phillies in 2012 before being designated for assignment on June 28. He was signed by the Phillies as a free agent prior to spring training...

Orioles acquire Thome from Phillies for two minor leaguers

The Baltimore Orioles announced Saturday they acquired designated hitter Jim Thome from the Philadelphia Phillies for minor league right-hander Kyle Simon and catcher Gabriel Lino. Thome, a five-time All-Star, is tied with Sammy Sosa for seventh all-time with 609 home runs. He trails only Alex Rodriguez (642) on the active list and Barry Bonds (762) and Ken Griffey Jr. (630) among...

Buehrle tosses strong seven innings as Marlins edge Phillies

MIAMI -- Seven innings and two runs allowed, Mark Buehrle will take that every time. And so will the Miami Marlins. Buehrle (7-8) also allowed seven hits and struck out seven in a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies to win their third straight. "The couple hits they got were change-ups up in the zone, but overall I'll take every start going seven innings and giving...

Phillies on wrong end of sweep vs Marlins

The half-way point of the season finds the Phillies nine games under .500 and 11 games out of first in the National League East. They reached season highs in both of those marks by virtue of a three-game sweep at the hands of the Miami Marlins.
