You can’t talk about Houston sports without mentioning the Astrodome. The so called “Eighth Wonder of the World” was the centerpiece for both the MLB Houston Astros (1965-1999) and NFL Houston Oilers (1968-1997) through thick and thin (mostly thin). The first professional domed stadium of its sort sits idle after these 15 years. The relic was remembered by Houston Chronicle blogger Craig Hlavaty:
All I wanted was the Astrodome made of icing and pineapple cake, with the Astros “rainbow guts” color scheme inside.
And sometimes the groom’s wishes come true, even on a day designed for the bride (via Craig Hlavaty and fellow journalist Leila Rahimi):

The Astrodome hosted historic events like 1992 Republican Convention, the Muhammad Ali vs. Cleveland Williams heavyweight mismatch, concerts from Elvis, Guns and Roses, The Jackson 5, Rolling Stones, and U2, the 1989 NBA All Star Game, WWF Wrestlemania X-7 (featuring The Rock vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin), and the so called Battle of the Sexes tennis tilt between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King.(from other blog).
It sits in limbo as Harris County decides how to disposition the architectural monstrosity. In the meantime, inspiration for pineapple cake is about all it’s good for.
