You can’t talk about Houston sports without mentioning the Astrodome.  The so called “Eighth Wonder of the World” was the centerpiece for both the MLB Houston Astros (1965-1999) and NFL Houston Oilers (1968-1997) through thick and thin (mostly thin).  The first professional domed stadium of its sort sits idle after these 15 years.  The relic was remembered by Houston Chronicle blogger Craig Hlavaty: All I wanted was the Astrodome made of icing and pineapple cake, with the Astros “rainbow guts” color scheme inside. And sometimes the groom’s wishes come true, even on a day designed for the bride (via Craig Hlavaty and fellow journalist Leila Rahimi): Delicious Groom’s Cake (Not to scale) Credit: Leila Rahimi A rainbow of flavor inside! Credit: Craig Hlavaty, a.k.a. the groom The Astrodome hosted historic events like 1992 Republican Convention, the Muhammad Ali vs. Cleveland Williams heavyweight mismatch, concerts from Elvis, Guns and Roses, The Jackson 5, Rolling Stones, and U2, the 1989 NBA All Star Game, WWF Wrestlemania X-7 (featuring The Rock vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin), and the so called Battle of the Sexes tennis tilt between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King.(from other blog). It sits in limbo as Harris County decides how to disposition the architectural monstrosity.  In the meantime, inspiration for pineapple cake is about all it’s good for. - David Whitlock Related Articles: Houston voters reject bond proposal to save Astrodome Metrodome outfield “Baggie” fetches $3000 at auction Be sure to like our Facebook Page Check out Sports-Kings YouTube Channel Or follow us on Twitter - David Whitlock Follow @lhd_on_sports - Blog Follow @RBTS_baseball - Sports-Kings Follow @realsportskings The post PHOTO: Houston sports fan gets groom’s cake of Astrodome with ‘rainbow guts’ appeared first on Reading Between The Seams.

Jose Altuve should be an All-Star

Jose Altuve of the Houston Astros is currently fourth amongst American League second basemen in All-Star voting.  He trails Dustin Pedroia of the Boston Red Sox, Ian Kinsler of the Detroit Tigers and votes leader Robinson Cano of the Seattle Mariners.  This is one of the downsides of fan voting.  The 5-foot-6 Venezuelan is the current Major League Baseball hits leader, having...

Jose Altuve Might Actually Be Good Now

Is that an inflammatory headline? It feels like it might be. It’s not like Jose Altuve was bad before, of course. But this is the Internet, where it’s important to entice people to click on stories, and if you’re reading this, then I’ve already won. Success! Anyway, maybe this is more of a “me” thing […]

Anthony Bass could be back soon

The Astros are in a bit of limbo with righty reliever Anthony Bass. Lefthander Kevin Chapman, the Astros’ only major league lefty reliever to start the season, was recalled Tuesday to provide extra support as a third southpaw in the ‘pen against a lefthanded-heavy Mariners lineup. The Astros and M’s wrap a three-game set Wednesday.

The Astros Pitchers Are Still Tinkering

I’ve recently started taking golf lessons again. It’s the first time I’ve taken them in almost a decade, and in that 10 years I’ve developed a lot of bad habits. My shoulders over-rotate, my left knee collapses on the backswing, I release my wrists too early. I’m a mess, really. And working with a professional […]
