This team is unbelievable. The Bucs found yet another crazy way to win a wild game, and this time Josh Harrison was the hero. Josh Harrison, Mr. Super Utility, the 25th man who has been back and forth between Pittsburgh and Indy all season, leads off the ninth with an opposite field walk-off homer…just his second of the season. Hey, at this point, why not? J-Hay’s sudden and dramatic blast was not the only big moment in this one. Jeff Locke got off to a poor start and allowed three quick runs in the first three innings. The Bucs responded with a huge two-run double by Andrew McCutchen, and then a game-tying TRIPLE by Pedro Alvarez. Watching the Big Bull unexpectedly dig for third with all his might was quite a sight. After that, both pitchers settled down, although Henderson Alvarez thoroughly outpitched Locke and allowed nothing else for seven innings. Jeff couldn’t finish the sixth, but Vin Mazzaro cleaned up his minor mess. Mazzaro then got in to trouble in the seventh (some shoddy defense didn’t help), but was bailed out with a phenomenal catch by McCutchen in center, a foul ball that missed being a double by inches, and a flyout on a full count with the bases loaded. Cutch’s catch [click for the GIF] was the big highlight, though, and with the spectacular diving grab on the low, hard-hit liner, he had the biggest offensive and defensive play of the game at that point. It’s becoming more and more evident every day that he really could be the NL MVP. The Pirates had a golden chance to go ahead in the eighth off old buddy Chad Qualls, who loaded the bases with no outs. Just like the guy we got to know so well last year. Qualls was lifted, though, and LOOGY Mike Dunn struck out Pedro, then got Russell Martin to bounce in to a DP. After that devastating blow, the Pirates didn’t miss a beat. Bryan Morris went 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth, and Harrison – pinch hitting for Garrett Jones (a seemingly ridiculous move, but the lefty was still in) – lifted one out of the yard before you could say “Hoist the Colours.” There’s always great anticipation for a potential walk off blast when the Bucs bat in a tie game in the bottom of the ninth, but I don’t think anyone was expecting that – probably not even Harrison. What a moment. Pirates 4, Marlins 3 / Box / 2013 Record: 68-44 / Next: Wednesday, vs. Marlins, 7:05 Source: FanGraphs
