The Pirates came up big in the late innings again on Saturday night, delivering a 4-2 win to the season’s biggest crowd of 39,173 at PNC Park. The Bucs have won the series against the Mets and have moved back in to a tie for first place (and the best record in baseball). Andrew McCutchen led the way for the Pirates in this one. Down a run in the sixth (and coming off a demoralizing bases-loaded Jose Tabata GIDP in the fifth), Cutch led off the sixth with a game-tying blast to center – a beautiful swing. The game was still tied the next time he came up – in the seventh, with two on and two out. Cutch smashed one off a diving David Wright‘s glove and into left field, scoring Travis Snider, who had reached on a pinch-hit single (look, the bench did something good!). Cutch was the star of the night but the pitching staff got the job done as usual. A.J. Burnett‘s start was decent – he was getting plenty of strikeouts (8) but a few too many walks (4) cost him and he was only able to go 5.2 innings. A.J. allowed a run in the fourth on a walk and a double, then nearly escaped a jam in the fifth thanks to a favorable call on a close play at the plate. The Mets bounced back with a double steal and an infield hit, though, extending their lead to two.  Still, Burnett did a nice job limiting damage and appeared to be pretty effective outside of a few control lapses. (Granted, the Mets’ lineup is terrible.) Garrett Jones led off with a double in the fifth and scored on a Jordy Mercer liner to right, cutting the lead in half. The Bucs then loaded the bases but couldn’t score thanks to Tabata’s DP, completing a great spot start for New York’s Carlos Torres. Luckily for the Pirates, though, he was only able to last five innings and they had better luck against the bullpen. McCutchen rudely greeted David Aardsma right away, and the offense was able to string together three singles and two walks in the seventh to hand the ‘pen a two run lead. Justin Wilson held down the fort after Burnett left in the sixth, and once the Bucs grabbed the lead in the bottom of the seventh, Mark Melancon and Jason Grilli had things very much under control. Six up, six down, and another victory. The losing streak from earlier this week seems like ancient history now, doesn’t it? The Bucs are playing well again and everybody is happy on the North Shore. PNC Park is the place to be these days, and that’s not going to change any time soon. Pirates 4, Mets 2 / Box / 2013 Record: 56-36 / Next: Sunday, vs. Mets, 1:35 Source: FanGraphs
