Neil Walker drove in the go-ahead run with a groundout during a wacky fourth inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied to beat the Kansas City Royals 5-3 on Saturday night. The Pirates have won three straight and are 11-3 since May 25, the best record in the major leagues in that span. Pittsburgh also moved four games over .500 at 31-27. Clint Barmes drove in Pedro Alvarez with an infield hit as the Pirates scored five times in the fourth on three singles, only one of which made it to the outfield. Jared Hughes (2-0) pitched 2 1-3 scoreless innings to get the win and Joel Hanrahan got three outs for his 17th save in 19 opportunities. Royals starter Vin Mazzaro (2-1) was knocked out of the game in the fourth.

News and notes: Appel, Karstens, Tabata

Some leftovers from yesterday… First round pick Mark Appel had a rough game yesterday in his second postseason start. He allowed 5 earned runs in 4 innings in what ended up being an awful 17-1 loss to Florida State. Appel completely lost his control late in his outing – he walked five (two with the bases loaded), hit two batters, and threw a wild pitch. His college season will...

Royals swept by Pirates, 4th loss in a row

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Andrew McCutchen homered and drove in three runs, A.J. Burnett won his fifth consecutive start and the Pittsburgh Pirates finished their first sweep of an AL team in more than a decade by beating the Kansas City Royals 3-2 Sunday. McCutchen hit an RBI double in the first inning and hit a two-run homer in the third, giving Burnett (6-2) and three relievers enough...

Royal Flush

After last night’s game, I got this tweet and thought it raised a very valid point: Today was the complete opposite, but the end result was the same. The Pirates knocked off the Royals again, completing a sweep and moving within a half-game of the Reds (who play tonight vs. Detroit). Andrew McCutchen was the only offense this afternoon. He doubled home a run in the first inning...
