The Pittsburgh Pirates fan who fell from the right field wall at PNC Park has spoken publicly about his injuries for the first time.

Kavan Markwood, the 20-year-old fan who fell from the 21-foot Clemente Wall at PNC Park in Pittsburgh on April 30, remains hospitalized and described himself as dealing with “broken everything.” Markwood also said he has not yet watched the video of his fall.

“I’m all right,” Markwood told Tom Davidson of TribLive. “I can’t really sleep. I have a lot of back pain.”

Markwood added that he appreciated the support from fans. A GoFundMe page set up on his behalf had raised over $48,000 as of Wednesday afternoon.

According to an update on the GoFundMe page, Markwood is dealing with a broken neck, clavicle, and back, but was able to take his first steps on Monday. At a Wednesday press conference, Allegheny General Hospital chief medical officer Dr. Allan Philp said Markwood also suffered a brain injury in the fall.

Markwood said he expects to be released from the hospital in about a week, and plans to talk more at that point.

The 20-year-old Markwood is a former college football player from the Pittsburgh area. He fell from the stands accidentally while celebrating an Andrew McCutchen double, and the frightening incident was captured on television cameras.
