Game two at Target Field falls on Phil Hughes (3-7, 4.82 ERA) as he takes on Samuel Deduno (4-2, 3.32 ERA) in hopes of keeping the momentum going after last nights 10-4 blowout. Hughes’ last outing was encouraging, holding the Rangers to two runs and five hits in eight innings but he had zero run support, literally zero as the Yankees were shut out. It could be the start of a turn around for Hughes, who is 1-5 with a 5.19 ERA and seven homers allowed in his last eight starts. Deduno threw only 87 pitches through seven innings Thursday against the Royals. The right hander gave up just five hits and one run on a homer. He struck out three and walked one to improve to 3-0 with an 0.93 ERA vs. Kansas City. There has been rumors that Hughes could lose his spot in the rotation with Ivan Nova pitching well and Michael Pineda working his way through a rehab assignment, Joe Girardi said on Monday that he hope Hughes “gets on a roll here.” He has been inconsistent this season to say the least. He has allowed four or more runs in six of his 15 starts this season, but his ability to shut down the dangerous Texas offense restored some faith. Hughes is 2-1 with a 3.33 ERA in four career starts against the Twins. “Every time I take the ball, I just clear my head and go out there and do the best job I possibly can,” Hughes said Thursday. “I really don’t let talk and things like that creep into my head, so I guess it takes some experience and going through it to handle that stuff better. It’s really not an issue.” Robinson Cano is 10-17 through four games of the team’s seven-game trip, with three home runs and five RBIs. ”You know that eventually he’s going to get hot again, that’s the bottom line,” Girardi said. “He swung the bat very well in Baltimore.”   Game kicks off at 8:10 PM (EST) on Yes.
