Found June 04, 2013 on The Bay Cave:
PLAYERS: David Price
TEAMS: Tampa Bay Rays
A couple weeks back, manager Joe Maddon said the Rays would be cautious bringing starting pitcher David Price back from the D.L. Today, talking on 620 WDAE’s Ron & Ian Show (interview’s at the end of this post), pitching coach Jim Hickey said that Price may not return until the end of June. However, the team is monitoring him closely and Hickey stated Price is doing good so far. He’s doing very well.  He’s right on track. When we get back into town Friday will probably be the first time he gets on the mound and throws a bullpen session.  So without getting too specific on the time frame, he’ll probably have to throw a minimum of three bullpen sessions.  He’ll probably throw a simulated game and then he’ll probably have to make couple of appearances in the minor leagues to build himself back up to six innings and 95 or 100 pitches. Since being placed on the disabled list on May 16, the Rays are 11-6 but have won seven of their last eight games. In those eight games, the Rays pitching staff has allowed an average of 3.5 earned runs per game. To hear Jim Hickey talk more about Price, Jeremy Hellickson, and other pitchers, listen below. The post Price will not return until end of June appeared first on The Bay Cave.

Tampa Bay Rays’ Matt Moore Emerging As A True Ace

The best teams in baseball that have success on a consistent basis seem to have one thing in common, and that is they have a strong pitching staff. The Tampa Bay Rays are one of these teams that always receive great contributions from their pitchers. This is one of the reasons that in past couple of seasons, they either have a great chance of winning their division or earning a wild...

State of the Rays: Tampa Bay's bats heat up in May

For the Tampa Bay Rays, May was a month of an offensive awakening. It seems odd to consider now, but there was a time in April, particularly during a nine-game road trip to Texas and Boston and Baltimore, when there was concern about how the Rays would produce enough to stay competitive. At the time, newcomers such as James Loney and Yunel Escobar hit below .200 with an on-base percentage...

Rays' David Price will throw off a mound Friday

As we often mention here, there are some pretty specific steps pitchers take in recovering from an injury.  There's the initial rehab phase, there's the playing catch phase, there's the long toss phase, then there's the pitching from a mound phase.  The Tampa Bay Rays will have David Price move to the pitching from a mound phase Friday.  It's a big step in...

Matt Moore, Finished or Unfinished

Matt Moore was a tippy-top pitching prospect, and like all tippy-top pitching prospects, he was supposed to become an ace. Based on his current sub-3 ERA and number of strikeouts, he’s arrived at a young age. Based on the rest of the picture, Moore remains at least partially unfinished, as he continues to struggle with command consistency. But that’s “unfinished,” relative...

Rays 3, Tigers 0

Twice, Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon intentionally walked Miguel Cabrera with a runner on second, giving Prince Fielder a chance to break the game open with a big hit. The move worked both times - and it was the Rays who finally ended a scoreless deadlock with three runs in the ninth inning. Matt Joyce, Evan Longoria and Desmond Jennings each drove in a run in Tampa Bay's last...

DETROIT (AP) -- Matt Joyce hit a sacrifice fly to break a scoreless tie in the ninth inning, and Evan Longoria and Desmond Jennings each drove in another run to lift the Tampa Bay Rays to a 3-0 win over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night. Rays-Tigers Preview

Thanks to a decision by Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon, the pitcher that has been toughest to hit in baseball will get a chance to face the hitter with the best average. Matt Moore will try to improve to 9-0 as he faces Miguel Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers in Tuesday night's opener of a three-game set at Comerica Park. Maddon could have used Moore on Sunday in Cleveland...

Weekend Recap: Bizarro-Tribe Drops Two to Rays

The Indians lost two of three to Tampa Bay Rays this weekend, which really isn’t all that interesting until you stop to notice exactly how they went about it. We should have known that strange times were in store on Friday evening when, after being delayed by two hours, the Indians allowed the game to begin before succumbing to a second rain delay just ten minutes later.  Perhaps...
