J.J. Putz had another stellar season in the bullpen for the Arizona Diamondbacks but now the question is will he be back. Putz and the Diamondbacks have a mutual option for the 2013 season. If both sides agree to pick it up he’ll make $6.5 million if not he’ll get a $1.5 million buyout and test free agency. At the moment we don’t know if Putz is interested in coming back but we do know is that the team wants him back.
vindeaz: What are the odds J.J.’s option gets picked up?
Derrick_Hall: It is likely a priority of ours. He has been outstanding. He is a great leader in that bullpen and mentor to our relievers. We have had so much confidence turning the ball over to him to close out games, it is hard to imagine us not doing so. (MLB.com)
In two seasons, Putz has saved 77 games while blowing only nine. He’s also struck out 126 batters over 112 and a third innings, allowing only eight homers.
Those are pretty good numbers and I’m sure any team looking for a closer would make an offer if he decided to test the market. After resurrecting his career in Arizona though I’m not sure if Putz would want to go anywhere.
